Dave148 presaged this new Evanston restaurant from the owners of Lulu’s, in April. It is now open and doing a very good job. Great rehab on the décor. Two pages of food menu that offers creative variations of old favorites. The web site is still under construction, so you can’t get a good idea of what they have, yet.

Interesting salads. Good, chunky guac. Very good garlic-citrus shrimps app. Tacos include Crispy Duck, Spicy Shrimp, Potato (try it), Carnitas, Chicken Thighs (hooray, dark meat), Carne Asada and others. All are enhanced with a nice variety of good sauces (chipotle, mole, orange-garlic. Chipotle, etc.) and different slaws.

Table sauces include a green tomatillo and a spicier red, but you can ask for a kicked-up red sauce that will add some more heat.

I’m not a beer maven, but the four pages of beer, wine, tequila and specialty drinks looked very inviting.

Pricing is reasonable. Three of us stuffed ourselves and had three glasses of wine for a pre-tip $25/per.

Definitely worth more trips to run the menu.

I ate there about a week ago and thought it was really good. Two of us each ordered their 3-taco platter, which comes with rice and beans. We tried six different tacos--carne asada, beef cheeks, chicken thighs, duck chorizo and egg, pork carnitas, and one that I can't remember right now. All tacos were tasty, seasoned well, good portions, and nice, traditional garnishes.

We also had a order of guacamole, which was very good and fresh. The rice and beans were tasty, although the rice was a bit strange. I also had a really tasty hand-shaken margarita and a beer while I waited for the food to be ready. Bill was only around $33 for all that prior to tip, which seemed like a bargain to me.

Disclaimer; I'm friendly with Dan, the owner, but only because I'm a regular at Lulu's and really like the food there.

IMO, Taco Diablo is the high-quality inexpensive margarita-chips-taco place that Evanston's been needing. I'll certainly be back.

What ever happened to Lindo Mexico? That was my Mexican-haunt about in college 20 years ago (20 years  )

It was pretty bad, but it was reliably bad.

The joint on Maple, right? Long gone, as is Los Magueyes on Chicago Ave., which at least had good mole, strong Margaritas, and was within easy walking distance of my house. The generally OK Las Palmas is still around, albeit in a different downtown location (the much better Howard St. location is also a distant memory), as is the execrable Lupita's, on Main St.

Oh man I miss Los Magueyes, or Los Mayonnaise, as we nicknamed it (not that they had anything with mayo). Great salsa, flautas, queso fundido, and they basically hurt me hooked on cilantro. We ate there probably weekly in the 80s
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?

Heh - my then-BF and his wacky pals called it Los Gay Guys. 'Magueyes' admittedly doesn't roll off the tongue for a non-Spanish speaker! :) (. . . and you are right about both the salsa and the queso fundido. YUM!)

Which three tacos did you try?

When the Evanston Lunch Group dined at Taco Diablo on 8/23/12, we shared orders of the spicy shrimp, pork carnitas, and duck (I think) tacos plus some other dishes, including chilaquiles. I don't see a post from then, so I'll try to look for my notes and add to this thread. I think nr706 took some pix.

PS. TD appears to have their menu posted now.

An overnight fire in downtown Evanston that's still burning at this hour has destroyed the Pine Yard and Taco Diablo restaurants along with a nail salon on Davis Street at Oak Avenue.
