Trucks around Northwestern Memorial

a while back on CH, there had been a little bit of talk about a number of lunch trucks around Northwestern Memorial hospital.

Does anyone have any updated info? What trucks are around, where they park, how late they stay open?

I am likely to be there in the early evening, so any that hang a little longer would be most likely for me to hit.

My infos not too current, as I'm usually only up that way during Farmer's Market season. Most trucks seem to leave after lunch, but I don't know if they come back in early evening.

That said, the following trucks are typically there around lunch:

Fontano's Subs
Pizza Capri
What's Your Beef?
Burrito Buggy
And, my favorite, the name of which I can't remember, is a jerk chicken truck--West Jamaican or something like that...

I think there was an African truck or two at one point, but I've not seen that for a couple years.

I'll be interested to hear what you find, as farmer's market season is getting close.

I worked in the area until about 6 months ago. There are a lot of trucks. Connie's Pizza, What's The Beef, and a halfway-decent jerk chicken truck come to mind immediately.

If my memory serves, many of these trucks are gone by 4pm, and frankly, any of them that are still around might be serving the dregs of the day.

The area Superior & Fairbanks is the corner to find them, again, if memory serves.

Sorry I don't have any more recent info.

I go to school down there and eat at the lunch trucks fairly frequently...They show up around 10:30 or 11, and they're gone before 2, generally.

I can vouch for West Jamaican's jerk chicken being really good, and there's also a Pasta Bowl truck with a good chicken Caesar salad.

Connie's Pizza is in a different location from the rest, and I don't know where the burrito truck is..

The burrito truck is with the rest, but it always appeared somewhat more sporadically.

I don't think you'll find any trucks around there in the early evening, but if you need an inexpensive meal in the area, you might check out the NWM cafeteria on the 2nd floor. Lots of options, and a good value.

Does anyone have updates on this thread? Are the Fontano's, Jerk, and Past Bowl trucks still in the area? Also, anyone know what intersection they like to cluster in?

I just took a job right next to NMH and am looking for options within a block or two (don't want to walk too far come February).

If anyone knows of other lunch options, I'd love to hear them as well. (The cafeteria at NMH is the best option I've found thus far, although I'm just getting started.)

Our office used to be near the trucks until we moved to River North. I think there are more food options now than there were four years ago when my office was there. I’m usually a brown bagger, so I didn’t get out a lot. A lot of people would grab lunch in the Treasure Island (680 N. Lake Shore Dr.) They have decent chili and some good sandwiches—the roast turkey was particularly good because they actually had a roasted turkey that they cut slices from. I’m not sure where exactly you are from your post, but Fox & Obel (401 E. Illinois), which wasn't there when my office was, may also be an option although maybe not in February. Having non-grocery store/non-hospital cafeteria lunch options was something that excited a lot of us about moving.

Pasta Bowl, What's the Beef?, a pizza truck and maybe Fontano's typically hang out on Superior just east of the hospital, in front of the business school building. Two years ago a soul food/jerk truck used to show up, but haven't seen it in a while.

Even better, Toham's African truck used to hang out on Ontario just west of McClurg, but since construction ceased there I haven't seen it. Anyone know where it is now?

Vee Vee's African truck can be found on Ontario just west of Lake Shore, across the street from the W Hotel.

The African trucks are the best option IMHO. Nothing beats smoked fish and spinach with a side of kenke.

Sorry to ask again, but maybe someone can give an update.

Anyone know where the Toham (serving West African/Nigerian food) lunch truck relocated to? They used to be on Eerie just west of McClurg.

If not, I'll just go to Vee Vee's truck on Ontario.

Vee Vee's truck nowhere to be found. Normally located on Ontario and the lake (across from the W hotel). Asked the parking guys at the W if they had seen it around. It was there yesterday but didn't show today. Blah.

Called Toham to see if they could tell me where their truck relocated to. Phone was cut off. Are they still in business? Blah.

Ended up getting some really crust and damn tasty sourdough and decent, watery homemade hummus from Fox and Obel - a boring, if tasty consolation.

I was really looking forward fufu, spinach stew and smoked fish to fight off the snow today. I'll see if Vee Vee's is around manana. As the say "betta dey for okra soup tomorrow."

Every time I've checked over the last few weeks I've only seen Pasta Bowl. Bummer......

Spinach stew and amala - Nigeria's answer to fufu - are available from the Bolat (aka Iyanze) truck parked one block west of Fox and Obel.
