I'd very much appreciate some help from the group. I'm planning a dinner event for a large-ish group and am looking for a suitable Indian restaurant in the city. I haven't spent much time at Indian restaurants lately, so am out of touch with what is good now.

The list of candidates I've come up with is, in no particular order:
    - Cumin
    - Rangoli
    - Jaipur
    - India House (on Grand)
    - Hema's Kitchen (on Devon)

    Key criteria:
    - Food quality
    - Authentic (in the sense that I'm not looking for a fusion type thing like Vermillion or something so watered down that it barely qualifies as Indian food)
    - Service level (doesn't need to be fine dining, but attendees will notice if service isn't at least decent)
    - BYO is a plus

Any thoughts on the places listed or suggestions for alternatives?

    Thanks for your help.

I would go Rangoli. Fits all your criteria. I used to go to Cumin, until I went to Rangoli, Haven't been back to Cumin since. Not that its bad, just think Rangoli is really, really good. Haven't been to the other places mentioned.

I've been impressed with Tandoor. They have a number of well prepared, authentic dishes. While they offer some fusion dishes, it's not the focus of the menu The decor is nice, the service is attentive and they are byo.

Jaipur is excellent. My wife is northern Indian, and she and her family love Jaipur. Did a number of large-ish group meals there before moving away from Chicago.

No BYO, but the food quality, authenticity and service level are all very high. Never had a bad dish there, and the in-laws really enjoyed both the veg and non-veg dishes.
