My veggie friend is on a tight budget, and when we are out she prefers low-priced mexican dives. However, even low end places are getting to be $2/taco. And, a lot of places serve a lettuce/tomato/cheap cheese taco as the veggie choice. We'd really prefer to go indie and not end up at Chipotle; we end up there more than I can tolerate because, for her, 3 black bean/rice/gauc tacos work out to a tad more than $2/each. Somewhere there must be a cheaper, better alternative to Chipotle, right?

Fish tacos are ok, actually, though neither of us are big tilapia fans and we want to stay under the $2 price point for this inquiry. Geographical range would be north of Addison, east of Cicero, as far north as city limits.

A bit outside of your zone, but L Patron makes really good tacos, and they have a couple veggie options (queso con rajas & vegetarian special), and a few fish/seafood options. I can only vouch for the queso con rajas - delicious (their meat options are all very good). Great salsas too, if you're lucky they'll have the spicy green salsa.

    Hi Marco,

it seems to me that your friend will find more veggie options if she ventures beyond tacos -- look at choices for huaraches, sopes, gorditas, quesadillas and you will see fillings such as flor de calabaza (squash blossoms), huitlacoche (corn fungus), rajas (strips of poblano peppers), hongos (mushrooms), and nopales (cactus). The per-item cost may be more than $2 but she will probably need fewer than 3. Certainly a single huarache at Dona Chio will be enough ... maybe too much.

Here's the main thread on Dona Chio:
