i don't believe i've ever started a thread before because the food was so bad i felt i needed to warn people to stay away, but i'm doing it now. i took my niece to homeslice pizza, 938 w. webster for lunch the other day as it's near her house and i thought i'd seen some good reviews. the place is bizarre, though i imagine the local depaul students will keep the place jumping. the outside is nondescript, yet the inside looks like a log cabin- albeit one where the oversized logs are coated in an inch of shiny polyurethane. to finish off the look, behind the row of booths is a curtain wall of silver chains... but how was the pizza, you ask?? the pizza was horrible. puffy, tasteless crust, looking like those puffy pizzas one sees pictured in the freezer section at the grocery store. and the toppings i chose were bad as well. a few tiny specks of roasted red pepper and italian sausage lacking any flavor other than salt. i would have offered the leftovers to the nearest homeless person i passed on the way back to my car, but no one was around to give it to, so i passed it off to my brother. no word yet on what he thought of it. the only thing that saved the day was a trip to the restroom. every inch of the floor and walls was covered in pennies laid in clear resin. quite beautiful, but not edible so it didn't save the meal.

We ate here today and really enjoyed it. The crust seems a little malty, like Roots' Quad Cities style pizza. We had the Mac Diesel: Pepperoni, mushrooms, red onions, mozzarella, provolone, the house "pesto/Marinara" and sliced Roma tomatoes. My wife told me that she liked this pizza more than Coalfire's. I won't go that far, but this was a solid pie nonetheless.

As for the decor, we both like it. Yes, it's more northwoods than Naples, but there's nothing wrong with that.

I'd happily eat that pizza - especially if I were drunk - but those tomatoes look pretty anemic.

The toppings all look a bit (actually more than a bit) too raw for me. And, personally, I'm not a fan of that much crust--particularly, when it's on the underdone side which this looks to be. But you can't taste a picture so if you enjoyed it, that's all that matters.

Yeah, they look kind of white in the pic. Maybe it was the flash or something. Glad to know they were tasty.

The photo does seem a bit washed out. And I thought at first "too many ingredients", but if you check out the composition of the individual slices they look pretty well balanced.

Homeslice ownership is looking to expand their pizza operations to Old Town. They've taken over the former The Refinery space at Wells and Division streets and plan to open a new restaurant called The Happy Camper.
