    Hi all

Long, long, long time lurker... first time poster.

I did a search on these things, but most of the posts were 5 years old or older...

Husband's 60th birthday coming up and these are his two favorite things... looking for the your favorites in the city. The place that was our stand-by for osso bucco in the city recently closed. What are your recommendations? Open to all suggestions!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Not sure that I've ever had it in a restaurant, but I do love it, so I'm going to tag along on this thread. :)

We purchased two pieces of veal marked for osso bucco at the Eataly butcher counter this week. It was my first time cooking them, and the meat was fantastic, with perfect tubes of marrow. As they have been public about their restaurants cooking from their market products and the market selling what's served in the restaurants, I would recommend contacting La Carne and Baffo restaurants at Eataly, to inquire if they would prepare it with advance notice, even though not on the current regular menus.

Francesco's Hole in the Wall in Northbrook does a very good osso bucco. It's usually on the menu this time of year, but you may want to call ahead to be sure.

You can also try Zia's in Edison Park and their new restaurant Zia's Lago Vista in Chicago. They may be specials....again...call ahead.

Making it at home is not all that difficult. You may want to give it a shot.

Try Riccardo Trattoria on Clark St in Chicago. Not cheap @ $38.00 but like everything on their menu I would assume it's of high quality.

Rosebud Steakhouse, 192 E Walton has an excellent osso bucco. It used to be a Thursday night-only special, but was elevated to the regular menu. It is one of the better versions of osso bucco that I have had in the city.

I had dinner at Mia Figlia in Edgebrook last night. Some early problems with over-salting seem to have been corrected and the food was much better than it used to be; to the point where I asked if they had a new chef (they don't, it's still the owner cooking).

They have osso bucco on the menu and the waitress told me that they sell a lot of it commenting that it's one of the most popular items on the menu. I nearly ordered it, but instead had to get a duck special. I noticed a few other tables ordering the osso bucco, though. It might be worth checking out.

I'd check to see if these places currently have Boeuf Bourguignon on the menu, but I've had excellent Boeuf Bourguignon at Bistro Campagne and Le Bouchon.

Yup - last time I was at Bistro Campagne our waiter recommended the Boeuf Bourguigon for these cold winter months. I was tempted but went with the Foie de Veau. Always enjoy my meals there.

I had a pretty good version of osso bucco at Riccardo Trattoria last night. The prep was slightly different than I had seen before (pureed sauce of some sort and no peas), but was very good in its own right. Priced at $38, it's not cheap, but on a cold, snowy night like last it, it hit the spot.
