I searched the forum for the best Mexican places in Rogers Park (I'm thinking on Clark between Devon and Howard) and I couldn't find much recent. Does anybody have recent experience they are willing to share? I love the tamales from the tamale place (La Guerrero?) near Lunt, but I've been meaning to try some of the Mexican seafood restaurants, too. I'm curious: what do LTH folks think is really good recently?

I ate at two places this weekend: Rocky's and I can't remember the name of the other one but it was at 6952 N. Clark. The nameless place had a sign in the window with a picture of Al Pastor on a vertical spit and something about it being available that way Saturday and Sunday from 4pm to 9 pm.

Rockys Al Pastor was good, with chunks of pineapple. The tortillas were a bit dry. I thought maybe that was intentional. The Mardonna Torta wasn't good. Kinda mushy with muted flavors.

The 6952 N. Clark place totally rocked the Al Pastor tacos and they gave me chips and salsa. Two taco sauces were also delicious. Go there. You'll be happy.

I think that would be La Calandria, which actually bills itself as Latin American, not Mexican.

    A few other suggestions:

Cuetzala and Su Taqueria El Rey Del Taco.

So many more, but the threads can be difficult to find via search. I found a few when I searched for the work "clark."

One more, not in RP but on the north end of Andersonville, is GNR Huaraches Dona Chio. (thread)

Ronnie beat me to the punch.

I'm a huge fan of Huaraches Dona Chio. It's kind of a best kept secret, too. I'm not sure I've ever had to wait for a table there. I actually never had huaraches until I went there. It is the real-deal. One of the family members actually makes the tortilla the old fashioned way, herself.

Highly, highly recommended. My favorite is the potato and chorizo huarache with both salsas. So good. And they have bottled Coke from Mexico, too.

Pretty sure La Calandria closed and it's something else now. Google says it's called Taqueria Cielito Lindo.

La Calandria's menu was pretty standard Chicago Mexican taqueria fare, except they had a lot more shrimp dishes than is typical. The food quality was standard Chicago taqueria level-which usually ranges from bland to very poor in my experience.

Yeah, I wasn't sure and I've never been there. I was just trying to identify what's currently in that space, since it was recommended so enthusiastically above.

Someone gave me a tip that the new Taqueria Vargas, on California just south of Touhy, is good, fresh, and authentic. The few pictures on Yelp look pretty good and I hope to try it soon.

I assume the Dona Chio on Clark (on the 6900 block, I think) is theirs, as well? Think it's still there.
