We’ve been intrigued by the new ramen shop on Davis Street in Evanston and with a bright sunny day out and cold, winter-like temps (finally), we decided it was the right day to find out just how good their ramen is. Table to Stix offers three versions: we chose the veggie miso ramen and the shoyu ramen and split them. They also offer a tonkatsu ramen. Bowls aren’t overly large portions and they aren’t cheap: $11-13 per bowl, not including any add-ins, which generally run $0.50 - $1. By way of (not-entirely-fair) comparison, Santouka Ramen runs about $8-13 and their “large” is noticeably larger than what Table to Stix offers. Given the generosity with the noodles and other items, we were a little surprised at the relatively small amount of broth. I’d put the size of the bowls here somewhere between the small and medium size bowls at Santouka. In addition, there is a six-item “small bites” menu from which we added the gyoza, five for $5.

Veggie miso ramen
Shoyu ramenPluses: gyoza wrappers tasted as if they’d just been made and filling was fresh and very good. Bowls of chock full of noodles and other ingredients. Tofu in the veggie miso ramen tasted as if it was just made as well. Extremely fresh ingredients.
Minuses: Broth is perfectly good but nothing special. Neither one of us could detect any miso flavor in the veggie miso ramen. On balance, better than one would expect to find in Evanston (shall we say) but not in the same league as a serious ramen shop. A bit pricey, considering portion size.
Service was fine and the room is warm and bright. There is a small bowl of "ramen sauce" on the table but you have to ask for togarashi. We can easily imagine this place filled with Northwestern students. You could do far worse if you find yourself in the vicinity, but we wouldn’t make a special trip.
