Intrigued by the LTH article by jnm123 - http://www.lthforum.com/2015/09/a-big-b ... -or-right/ - and a subtle hint from another LTH North Lunch Group member, our group had an outstanding lunch here recently.

I believe everyone in our group ordered off of the Lunch Special section of the menu. I selected the Sundae-Kuk - Korean sausage soup with rice. I've never had this soup before. It was very filling and piping hot. The sausage wasn't too firm which made it easy to spread around the flavorful broth. Our table shared a couple of orders of Goon-Mandu dumplings. There was one other appetizer - though I don't recall what it was. Panchan was fresh and quite good. I hope others from our lunch will chime in with their comments.

Service was fast and friendly from this mom and pop type establishment. At the conclusion of our group meal, we were served complimentary cookies. I'm looking forward to return visits to work my way through the menu.

The strip mall that this place is located in is a little United Nations. Next door is Alef Sausage & Deli for all of your European delicacies. A few doors to the east is the Mundelein outpost of Garden Fresh Market.

I certainly got a kick out of getting to try Budae Jjigae -- and enjoyed it tremendously.

The cookies the owner gave us were addicting. Would love to know what they're called.

I've had better dumplings, but they were still tasty. The panchan was not stunningly varied, but was very fresh and really delicious.

Like Dave 148, I look forward to going back and trying more dishes. Hard to judge a place on one meal, but I definitely enjoyed the meal I had.

    Hey all--

Glad you all enjoyed Hwang Dae Gham. The place is nothing if not consistent, as I've been lunching there a couple times a month for the last 2 years or so. In my book, great authenticity of cuisine for being this far away from the city.

Dave, you adventurous so-and-so. The 'soondae' is blood sausage, and it fell apart because the filler is chopped up vermicelli noodles, inside an intestinal casing. Wonderful beefy flavor, and filling as well.

Besides the pan-fried mandu, the other appetizer was dukbokki, an interesting platter of rice cake cylinders, scallions, fish cake strips, pork belly, chop chae glass noodles & hard-boiled egg halves drenched with a fiery but sweet Korean gravy. It's addicting, and tastes just as good cold the next day.

This place definitely satisfies a jones for Korean fare when around these parts.

So, jnm123 -- any idea what those crispy "cookies" were? Crispy, a little sweet, a little salty, looks like they're made in sheets and cut up -- have a name for those, too, bu any chance?
