After the unsuccessful Xoco Wicker Park experiment, Rick Bayless switched gears at his Wicker Park location late last year and turned it into Fonda Frontera, PR'd as a "Mexico City-inspired neighborhood restaurant."

There's a whole lot on the menu that looks great, from pork belly sopes "al pastor" to pigs foot tostadas to a comforting sounding bowl of pozole. I hope to get back and try some or all of that, but on my inaugural visit, I was there for the most traditional of Mexican foods: the hamburguesa con queso.

Ground chuck topped with spicy Hatch green chiles, a whole lot of "artisan" Jack cheese, and fried egg, this was a messy, somewhat over the top burger eating experience. It's not mind blowing, but this was really good burger that I'll have no problem ordering again (once I've had a chance to order more of the menu).

No sides come with the burger, but there are a few sides listed on the menu generally, not designed to go with the burger. We kept it more traditional here with fantastic esquites.
