Mario's is on the border, so the address on Google says Glenview, but their website says Northbrook -- but both offer 2677 Shermer as the street address (just a few doors south of the corner of Willow and Shermer).
A friend had been bugging me for a couple of years to try this place, and today we were able to coordinate schedules and finally get there. The sign out front says Mario's Pizza, but my friend was pushing the tacos. We got a basket of steak and a basket of chicken -- but not until after my friend introduced me to owner, Danny.
Danny was delighted to have someone chat about food, rather than just speeding in, grabbing food, and leaving. He puts a lot more thought into the food than one might guess, seeing that it's a tiny little place (four booths and a few bar stools against one wall). He buys his chicken at Harrison's Poultry ("it costs a bit more, but I think the quality is worth it"). Uses marinated, char-grilled skirt steak in the steak tacos. Makes his own salsas (red and green) in-house. We didn't have fries, but I did see them, and they look wonderful ("we cut them up 50 pounds at a time and fry them as they're ordered, so they're always really fresh"). He also serves Vienna beef hot dogs. And my friend said the pizza is good -- and comes in five styles. The only thing Danny said he wouldn't recommend is the gyros, since they don't have the rotating gyros grill.
Not a destination spot, but if you're in the area and craving a quick but surprisingly tasty meal, it's a good option.
