i'm surprised there's no thread on this wonderful logan square restaurant. same day cafe is an unassuming, quiet dining spot with a turntable playing records (which you can request...at least i do). there's a counter, a row of tables and a couple of picnic tables shaded by large umbrellas out front. they make their own bread and it's fantastic, playing a major role in the success of much of their food. the menu barely conveys how delicious the mostly ordinary seeming sandwiches can be: egg salad and chicken salad are the best possible versions you could hope for. and their grilled cheese/tomato soup combo is revered by those who have had it. SDC is mostly a breakfast and lunch spot, though they now offer a blue plate dinner special for $10 on weeknights, which i'm eager to try. my breakfast yesterday was the best meal i've had in awhile: buttered and grilled toast topped with fantastic smoky/sweet bacon, pickled red cabbage, arugula and a perfect fried egg. it was a match made in culinary heaven.
