Hexe coffee (great baked goods!)

Hexe Coffee opened recently in the Lathrop Homes development. I went there last weekend when I was in the area. I had zero expectations going in.

I was blown away! The coffee was perfectly good, but what really sets them apart are the baked goods. They make them in house. The first time I went I had a lemony bar thing (can't remember what it was exactly, other than delicious) and the second time I had a heavenly spice cookie.

I have no idea if they got a real pastry chef to work with them or what exactly the story is, but these are some of the best pastries I've had in Chicago. Both my wife and I compared it favorably to Lost Larson in our debrief with each other (though Lost Larson makes more elaborate pastries and has a bigger bakery program of course)

I haven't been to Loba in a long time, but Hexe seems to be in a similar category to them.

I was excited for Hexe's opening (about 5 weeks ago.) They have parking in the back and a nice patio out front. What sets them apart from other cafes, in my opinion, is that they are a coffee shop by day and a bar by night. They are open until 10 or 11 pm every night. Today the barista recommended the strata with a believable, "I eat a piece every day I'm here." It was a generous portion of strata that iirc included cheese, butternut squash chunks, kale and onions. Very seasonal and very savory. I was debating between that, a tempting looking sausage and cheese "hot pocket" and an everything bagel seasoned scone. I look forward to returning in the evening. The atmosphere is beautiful and inviting with special touches like pretty window hardware and elegant lighting. It looks like they put thought into their ambiance and I am a fan.
