A few years ago, I was in South Africa doing some photography work and I absolutely fell in love with an African/Portuguese dish called Chicken Piri-Piri (aka peri-peri/pili-pili/peli-peli). Once I discovered it, I don't think a day went by without me eating it. Basically, it was a grilled chicken about the size of a cornish hen, perhaps a little bigger, marinaded in a hot-pepper, citrus, and some other herbs and spices, split in half (but not all the way through...kind of like a butterflied whole chicken, if that makes any sense), served with a special piri-piri sauce (every restaurant seemed to have its own blend.)

Now, I've found a couple of recipes on the web, but I haven't really been able to satisfactorily duplicate the taste. Which leads me to my question. Are there any places in Chicago that serve this?

Bumping this thread after years of neglect since I had an amazing chicken piri piri sandwich while in Montreal recently. I'd love a great cheap and greasy spot to grab takeout dinners. I'd even take a Nando's (not that that's likely to happen any time soon). So, anyone know of a Chicago spot?

It has sometimes appeared on Bolat's menu. (One caveat is that service can be quite leisurely.)
I would call ahead to see if they would make you a batch off-menu.

NB: "piri-piri" is the Swahili word for "spicy" or "piquant" and was supposedly picked up in Zanzibar and carried around the former Portuguese empire. Chicken piri-piri can show up as any number of things but often means roast chicken with hot pepper. I wouldn't assume that something African will necessarily be the same as something one had at a diner in Fall River or Toronto.

Not necessarily in response to the most recent bump (which requested something a little more downscale) but for future searchers, Fat Rice has had this dish on their menu for several months, and it's a very delicious renditon . . .

I know this isn't the Shopping & Cooking thread, but throwing it out there. Stopped in to Publican Quality Meats last night, and noticed that they sell a jarred Piri-Piri sauce that looked pretty good. Maybe worth a shot.

Whole Foods used to have the Nando's Piri Piri sauce and you can buy it here: http://nandosperiperi.elsstore.com/

I always assumed Nando's had a marinade or rub they used plus offering the sauce on the side ... had their chicken during a truly dismal visit to Cambridge UK about 6 years ago and eating there raised my spirits so I'd love to see one arrive in Chicago. They are in the Washington DC area

And I know they are not authentic or a match for Fat Rice but they really are rather good.

Thanks for that recipe. I've done a gazillion different peri-peris over the years, but nothing quite exactly like what I remember it being like in South Africa. Maybe part of it was just being there. I'll have to check that one out. Plus gotta do it on the grill. :) That was an essential part of the experience for me.

Nando's does sell a piri-piri marinade, but I've never seen it available here...just the sauces.

Webster's Wine Bar has Piri Piri chicken on their menu at the moment. Not sure if it's what you are looking for, but it sounded good.

Thanks for this recipe. I think I'll probably try my hand at adapting this into a sandwich made from a boneless skinless breast.

So, since Leek suggested that recipe, I've used it at least 12 times including with both my family and my in-laws over the holidays. It's seriously great (although, since bird chiles aren't easy to find around these parts, I just use tons of fresnos and red fingers). I definitely recommend it to anyone who has the craving for some peri-peri.

Figured I'd bump this thread since peri-peri seems to finally be clawing its way into the culinary mainstream. In addition to the dozen or so Nando's now open in the area, there's also the local chain Port of Peri-Peri (I've sometimes seen it shortened to "Porto's"). Any other developments worth discussing?

There's a Port of Peri Peri near me in Villa Park (it might be in Oakbrook Terrace, technically), and I think they changed the name from Porto Peri Peri - perhaps a trademark issue? I've been once, it was fairly solid, comparable to Nando's.
