I know that many of you get Dish, Chicago Magazine's dining e-letter. But this opened today's issue:

    Signs of Life
The Lill Street Art Center (4401 N. Ravenswood Ave.; 773-506-7380) has opened the First Slice Pie Cafe, a 24-seat restaurant whose proceeds go partly to First Life, a nonprofit program that feeds the hungry. “It’s a cafe, but a little bit different from most cafes,” says Marnie Schwartz, a partner. “Everything is homemade. We have a quesadilla, vegetarian or with duck, plus sandwiches, salads, homemade soups, and a variety of community plates.” Sounds like an honorable endeavor—and the chef is Mary Ellen Diaz, who put North Pond on the map a few years back. “We’re hoping for a social business model and that the proceeds go to feeding hungry people,” says Diaz. “Mayor Daley should have an agenda to end hunger in our community.”

Being not that far from my home, I plan to check it out shortly.

I wrote about it in this thread:

I hope more of you will stop in, now that MAG has put her stamp on it.

Sorry to have missed it - I don't have as much time to read the board as I used to. I'm glad that you liked it - I'm really looking forward to trying it.

One of my good friends takes classes there and says that it is a real plus for students and the neighborhood. The only drawback, I'm told, is that the savory food is prepared at their off-site kitchen, and reheated to order.
