Very quick as I have much work to do.

Hadn't planned on going out for b'fast yesterday, but after dropping my son and heir off at preschool, I found myself just too cold to continue walking with no bus in sight.

I've been in before for a coffee and snack on occasion and am not strongly pro or con on the place. It's nice enough. (I have one friend who adores it.) My own preference for breakfast runs strongly to the trad. American greasy spoon, so I wasn't all that excited to be there.

I went for their baked egg special, of which there are 4 varieties at about $6.50. The menu advises a 15 min. wait.

Maybe I was just cold and hungry, but I was very happily surprised. It was a fairly generous (not diner-sized, but still generous by upscale coffee house standards) gratin dish with a really lovely, crusty-from-the-oven mixture of egg, prosciutto, feta and spinach. Since a mere omelet at Arnold's can now run you $8 with three ingredients, this seemed to me quite a good value and was genuinely savoury and satisfying. The added bonus was all the good viennese pastry options for dessert with the second cup of good coffee. Something that is virtually non-existent even in the best greasy spoon (good coffee and a good sweet).

Now if they could just get potatoes into their repetoire, I'd become a regular.

Yep, that's the one. Sorry for not providing the coordinates myself.

It sounds something like the dish they call Breakfast Bread Pudding (or something like that) at Petit Gourmet, the little corner place on Rush right next to the entrance to the Peninsula Hotel. I like that very much.

Strange--Pig and I went to Julius Meinl last weekend and found ourselves in a neighborhood that we rarely frequent eating, of all things, dessert for breakfast.

    And it was damn good.

The coffee is decent there too. A very clean, one-note, well-brewed cuppa.
