My wife and I had a superb meal at Katsu last night, sitting as the sushi counter and chatting with Katsu. The highlights:

Agedashi with eggplant: the traditional dish, but with eggplant strips instead of tofu. Added yet another flavor to a great dish.

Premium yellowtail sushi: I don't know what "premium" means, but these slabs of yellowtail were a different food from the normal stuff.

Softshell crab with avocado wrapped in deep fried Yuba skin: As Katsu explained, this gives you a crunchy outside and a creamy inside.

Grilled premium yellowtail jaw: grilled with salt, and eaten with a squeeze of lemon, grated daikon and dipped in soy.

    Jonah,

Superb pretty much sums up my impression of Katsu. Superb is Mike G's take on Katsu as well, I'll link to a past post of Mike's with superb Katsu pictures. (Guess I like the word superb tonight. :) )

superb works for me. I still have dreams of the toro.

gary, how about a menu of your favorites at katsu. I'm sure everything there is as good as what I had, but I'm sure there are a lot of specialties i missed.

    recommendations are always welcome.

The thing about trying to name favorites from the menu at Katsu is that while there are undoubtedly some, often the most memorable dishes are the specials, which are of course a function of what he gets in, which is why you really need to ask Katsu what you NEED to eat that night. I certainly have favorites-- whatever the high-end toro is, the duck saikyo (though as I've said, it's never been as good as the first time), the grilled fish jaw (whatever fish it is on a given night), and the asparagus beef rolls. But I also go to be surprised by things I never expected.
