Wing Hoe in Edgewater

I'm headed there tonight and would love to hear any ordering advice. Also, is it byob?

We go often and take out grandma, who lives across the street. Fond of the eggrolls. Everything I've tried is generally good and fresh. My standby is Broccoli Chicken or beef. The lomein is also good. enjoy!

I don't know about BYOB but this is a place we visit often with a friend that lives in the area. We always have had good luck with the Yu Shan chicken which is heavy with garlic. Otherwise we just sort of cruise through the menu and try different things. Their curry chicken was pretty good as well. The service can sometimes feel a bit rushed there especially when they're havinga busy evening.

Pretty good for the genre. I also have a friend who lives nearby and we often go there when visiting him. Decor-wise, it's like a time warp in there, so be forewarned.

I had a similar thought.
When I saw the Wing Hoe posting I thought there was somebody in Edgewater who loves wings and was looking for a good place to find them.
Incidentally, the closest place I know of would be Buffalo Joe's on Howard at Clark.

Best chicken & broccoli ever, in my opinion.

I would consider myself a longtime customer of Wing Hoe.

After all, I started dining there 17 years ago when I lived a mere two blocks away and it was my go-to place for Americanized Chinese. Even after the exodus that took us way out to the food forsaken land of Gurnee, we still continued to make a quarterly and semi annual visits there for special occasions, birthdays or even just dinners after a day at the city beach.

This past week I happened to do one of those days at the beach, and when asked what to eat for dinner the kids unanimously yelled "Wing Hoe!". I went along, but with reservations, as my last several visits have each been each been less amazing then the one before. In other words, I thought it was a place in decline, but I was in denial.

Sadly, on this last visit the whole family left with the same empty feeling; that the food is now simply OK.

I guess they had a great 15 year run, but as of now, my opinion is that the run is over. I'm so sorry see this happen, they were great people to dine with and to this day, they still recognize me even though my visits are quite sparse.

love Wing Hoe. Haven't been in awhile. It's just out of our sightline range (live at Clark and Balmoral) so we forget about it. But I've loved everything I've gotten from there, and it's a pretty good bang for the buck.

Can I ask what specifically you think is wrong with it now? We usually get carry-out, so the atmosphere isn't really a part of my experience.

Just the food changed, or maybe its me? Have I moved on? Perhaps.

I just remember being in love with the food, seemed I couldn't order anything bad there. Now its all just OK, leaning toward the bland. From the egg rolls to the Kung Pao chicken and Mongolian Beef, they used to do those dishes better than anyone else, and now its just flat on flavor.

But the place and service have been exactly the same for all the years I've been a customer, so that's never been an issue.

honestly it could just be your own tastes. biologically they do change over time, your tongue gets a new set of taste buds, they spread, etc. That's why you don't like sharper tastes as a kid, and you do when you get older.

After 17 years I can see you thinking it's blander, but their recipes are probably mostly the same. I've only been there 10 times at most, in 3 years. Only because there are so many places to go around us, and I also like to cook.

We've ordered delivery from Wing Hoe a couple of times over the last year or so and have been pleased. I don't recall what we have had. We keep meaning to dine in. It's one of those places that feels endangered.

Husband and I had dinner reservations for Boka to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary. We talked about places that we went to 18 years ago that we considered going to for "special" occasions (we were teenagers). Wing Hoe was that place for us. We talked about the egg rolls, the kung po shrimp, beef and broccoli---and we decided to cancel Boka and go there instead.

We spent $27 on dinner for our anniversary dinner followed with a nice long walk on the beach at Foster. Best meal I've had in a long time. Nothing has changed. The decor, the menu and Im pretty sure the same surly Chinese woman at the front desk was there 18 years ago too.

Wing Hoe might be demolished.

Still here, still time warpy, still prepping pea pods and shoots on the front table, still serving a solid lunch special with one of my favorite Mongolian beef preps and an egg roll the size of a small burrito. May it never fade.

The mid-week Christmas threw us for a loop so we didn't really have any dinner plans or dinner fixings for Christmas eve or Christmas night. I knew we could get Chinese carry-out. Sun Wah wasn't taking phone orders. Wing Hoe was so away we went. Two egg rolls (the size of a burrito as Santander notes above), two shrimp egg foo young patties, ya shan shrimp, orange chicken and two containers of rice. The bag weighed a ton. This was not our healthiest meal but it was pretty tasty. Mr. X commented that he must have had lousy egg foo young as a youth because this version and the one at LTH for the holiday party were really nice. The orange chicken had a good spice level with pieces of hot pepper throughout. The shrimp dish also had a surprising kick with good mix of vegetables. I wish they didn't have to batter and fry both proteins.

Wing Hoe is definitely living on borrowed time. We aim to go back soon and enjoy the time warp of their dining room in person.

Maybe not 100% on point but to quote an article in todays’s New York Times “(t)he share of Chinese restaurants in the top 20 metropolitan areas has been consistently falling. Five years ago, an average of 7.3 percent of all restaurants ... were Chinese, compared with 6.5 percent today.” The article also notes that many first generation Chinese who opened restaurants long ago when they first came to this country worked seven days a week, 12 hours a day, and that their - often - college educated children do not want to take over the business. All of this to say, sorry they are living on borrowed time. I will definitely make a point to get there soon.

Wing Hoe's location is threatened by closing due to development. They may move to new digs, though it could simply come to a close.
