I'm looking for a good seafood place outside the city for my anniversary. I live in Schaumburg area and right now it's between Bob Chinn's and Nick's Fish Market in Rosemont. I've been to Bob's and like it, but wanted a new place if posssible. How does Nick's stack up? Any opinions? I don't want Shaw's because I don't like the ambiance, they always cram in the tables too close together.

    Thanks.

Others have sung the praises of Nicks, but I think it is overpriced tourist food, cooked without the slightest bit of care in the preparation. The last two times I went, the fish was badly overcooked and the waiters didn't give a damn about serving our table (not enough cigar smoking suits, I guess). A good alternative (especially for your anniversary) is Port Edward in Algonquin. Great atmosphere, nicely prepared fish, and a can't miss romantic atmosphere right on the Fox River. I'm going this weekend.

I went to Nick's in Rosemount last November with a group of 8 people (6 adults, 2 teenagers) and was quite disappointed.

The service was perhaps the worst. It was very hard getting a drink order in when we got there.

Their wine list pretty much sucked, but their bar was quite good.

Our appetizers were room temperature and not very appealing. I don't know if it was a difficulty in serving 8 or what.

I had ordered a pasta dish with scallops, the scallops were horridly overcooked. They did replace them with about half of the original scallop amount with nicely done ones when I complained.

Basically the food seemed overpriced and underquality.

I don't know if Nick's in going downhill or it's just the Rosemount location, I had a nice meal (for two) at their downtown location in 2001.

I haven't been to Port Edwards in a while but I've always been happy there.

Bob Chinn's is probably a better bet than Nick's, but I sometimes wonder about their quality. But I've mostly done lunch there and haven't been there in a while. But in 2002 the quality seemed quite downhill from the late 90's.

I hope you're figuring the space at Shaw's in Schaumburg is the same as the space at the downtown location - it is MUCH roomier in Schaumburg. I can't begin to imagine it being more cramped than Chin's.

Good luck, frankly I've been hoping to find some new exciting seafood place but haven't yet.

If you're willing to travel south, Tinfish in Tinley Park is wonderful.

See my earlier post as to why

thanks for the input on Nick's.

I was speaking to the Schaumburg location for Shaws. Every time my wife and I have gone, we get seated at 2 person table which is literally 8-12 inches from the table next to us. We can;t even have a conversation without the couple next to us hearing. I can't imagine the other location ebing worse, do they make you share booths with strangers? I do like the food though.

I'm not sure what day of the week you'll be having dinner, but I have enjoyed a quiet dinner at Shaw's on a weeknight. I made my reservations on opentable.com and requested a booth. They were very accommodating to my request - but it was a weeknight.

I'll second Port Edwards, they are celebrating their 40th year this year haven't lost any edge over time. Still good old fashioned service and up to date on the food. I do miss their river cruises, the man that operated them died and has not been replaced. They have a Friday night seafood buffet and a great Sunday brunch. Stevez posted the website, check it out.
