    Hi,

    Just got the following email:

"Katharine’s in town for the evening, and staying near Midway. Any suggestions for dinner, maybe downtown?"

I've gone through some posts via the search function, but was wondering if anyone had anything new to add. I'm not sure if she has a car, so anything nearby or within reasonable cab ride would be great.

    Thanks!!

My general suggestion for the midway area is Steve's Shish Kabob, mentioned a few times here, for very good middle eastern food. It's about 2 miles from midway, so a very short cab ride.

Whenever Mrs. Fujisan picks me up from Midway, we head to Szalas for some old fashioned Polish Highlands cooking. It's about 1/2 a mile east on Archer.

More about Szalas can be found here, although Mike's pictures seem to be gone.

    Thanks!!

These are excellent suggestions--I myself might have to make my way down there sometime.

    Thanks! :)

Wow. I remember when that place used to be the Red Barrel. I haven't been there since its changed, but I'll have to check it out.

Just kiddy corner across the street and train tracks, as much as I generally don't like buffets, there's Bobak's. Bang for buck this place is a steal, and the food is of suprisingly good quality. I like going there just for the pork chops and kopytka (Polish gnocchi). I really don't know how these guys can pull a profit. Lunch is something like under $10.

If Steve's Sish Kabob is close enough for you, you also might want to take into consideration places like Las Islas Marias at 5401 S. Pulaski, for solid Mexican seafood, and Zaca Tacos at 5925 S. Pulaski, for first-rate grilled tacos. It's by far my favorite taco joint in the city for steak tacos.
