Looking for taquerias/ mexican restaurants that use homemade corn tortillas, not commercial/factory made ones.

I know there are plenty to be had in the Pilsen area but am hoping there are some closer to my home in the Bucktown/Wicker Park/Logan Square area.

An assortment of other handmade masa antojitos would be awesome too, though the tortillas themselves need not necessarily be hand-patted-- freshly made using a tortilla press is acceptable.

My husband is convinced he doesn't like corn tortillas--but he's never had one freshly made, only packaged ones, and I'm pretty convinced fresh ones will do the trick to convert him.

I've tried searching both "homemade tortillas" and " taquerias AND Bucktown" and haven't found any conclusive or concise answers...

You might consider a visit to Maxwell Street Market.

VI and others have posted on Carnitas Paisa on Fullerton west of Logan Square, which has freshly made tortillas.

For a more upscale experience, there's Maiz on California.

Probably any place offering gorditas will be making them out of fresh masa, no?

Please report back on your efforts to convert your husband! :)

    B.,

There are quite a few such places around and it seems that over the past few years the overall number has increased.

Here's one of my favourites, with especially good tortillas, namely, Casa de Samuel...

Other places I've talked about here:

    Taqueria Tayahua

    Papi's Tacos

    La Cecina:

Also the various branches of La Quebrada (search for a post that lists all of them, maybe in GNR).

There's even a thread about the same question:

    That's just a few...

    Addendum: Haste makes waste

I should have read more carefully the geographical aspect of the above request! Guess I need my coffee... But if you want really good tortillas, I think Casa de Samuel's (22nd treet) are especially good...

I better go have my morning coffee now...

    Awesome.

The conversion process is going to begin at La Condesa, this Friday. I suspect it will be successful :)

I've also heard Taqueria Moran has homemade tortillas- true?

    I do not recall.

As Amata hinted, there are a lot of places where asking for a taco won't necessarily get you a handmade masa one, but asking for a sope or a gordita will. That's certainly the easiest way to increase your odds.

A better question might be, where are the great ones? Besides Rubi's/Manolo's at Maxwell Street, of course.

    Hey bananasandwiches (and all LTH)

I'd like to make a note that La Casa de Samuel's "other" location at 2047 N Milwaukee does not seem to exist. I decided to scope it out during a walk around Bucktown a couple weeks ago, and there's no sign of it's existence.

However, across the street there is a new(ish) looking restaurant promising huaraches, desayuno, etc. If they're making huaraches, maybe they're making tortillas too?

Yeah, I mentally "walked" myself around that area just now and don't think there is a Casa de Samuel there...but the new(ish) restaurant intrigues me.

The "great tortilla conversion of '06" will be beginning Saturday, Friday we'll be at the Sox game instead--and Sox games mean a stop at LSC for some salt and pepper shrimp and three chili chicken.

I'll make sure to document the conversion appropriately. I'm hoping we'll have the same success as we did with the "Sushi Conversion of '99"

I don't think so - the place just isn't that big, and I've never seen anyone make tortillas there.

If you're looking for fresh tortillas in Wicker Park, I'd also recommend Carneceria Leon, at Ashland and Blackhawk (1400 N?). They get fresh deliveries from several different Tortillerias around the city. I was in there recently during lunch, and happen to pick up a pack of corn tortillas, and they were still warm!
there's food, and then there's food
