Maxwell St Market 2004 Guide #1:
    Rico's Huaraches & Deliciosos Cokcteles (work-in-progress)

This work-in-progress guide will explore specific stands at the Maxwell Street Market, and provide some guidance as to how you can get what I consider the best stuff. This first installment features one (or is it two?) of my favs: Rico's Huaraches & Deliciosos Cokcteles (sic).

This picture guide is intended primarily as a help for novitiates; old timers probably know all this stuff already. Feedback is welcome: if you think I've misinterpreted or misrepresented some aspect of this surrealistically mercurial marketplace, I want to know.

One request: if you go to the market, please post about it (and shoot me an email so that I can include your comments in the next version of this guide).

It's near impossible to reduce Maxwell Street eating to one best, but if pushed come to shove, I would say the huaraches were it. Or maybe I should say better, if I had the near impossible job of reducing my favorites to one, well that would be the sweet flour empanadas sold between the cowboy clothes, but my second favorite would be the huaraches.

David, is there anywhere one could purchase a video about Maxwell Street including footage of the making of the cockteles and the huaraches at Rico's? Such a program would, I think, be invaluable for its portrayal of the market and its rich and colorful activity and cuisine.

    Hey Mike, thanks for asking.

As a matter of fact, you CAN get a DVD of Rico's and a lot of other cool Maxwell eat-stops! Go down to your basement, right next to the monitor, I believe I saw a box of them the last time I was over. Or, you can go to http://dchammond.com/gorilla/

    Happy viewing!

I once came across something like that on tv... very weird... gorillas and strange people with and without hats... eating brains :o ... really quite shocking  ... But the food looked monstrous delicious... :D

Nothing says Sunday breakfast like goat tacos !! stewed goat with onions and cilantro on a corn tortilla. Total chaos ordering here but well worth the effort.

Had too much to eat? Tired of the heat and the mass of humanity that Maxwell St. can sometime be? No problem, relax and center yourself with a little aroma therapy!

Hey JSM, could you resize those to a maximum of 600 pixels wide? Although I know some of them cry out to be big and beautiful, when they are they stretch the text for the whole thread out to that width, making things hard to read. Thanks.

The name "Rico's Huaraches" was the subject of some past discussion. There's no guy named Rico. Anyway, "ricos huaraches" translates to "tasty sandals," I guess, so there's no reason to be too literal here. I just raise the point because so many Mexican places advertise their antojitos as "ricos." That said, the above is a marvelous document, and Rico's Huaraches is as good a name as any to tag on an otherwise nameless place.

"His name was Rico, he made Huaraches..." Wasn't that a Barry Manilow song?

Anyway, I'm sure you're right. Rico's is just short-hand (I'm less comfortable, though, calling its companion stand Delicioso's -- as you say, best not to be too literal). In future editions, I will kill the apostrophe (as it doesn't appear on their sign).

    Thanks for the input.
