Looking for steak frites

Who has the best steak frites?

Mon Ami Gabi does a very fine job, at least the branch in Las Vegas, so I'll assume they do as well at the home office. Firkin in Libertyville also does a good job on that dish. But best? I have no idea.

I like le Bouchon for the steak frites and lyonaise salad. Plus it's quite a bargain. They have recently updated the menu and specials as well.

They're on Damen just south of Armitage

I just had steak frites at the Hopleaf and it was... SUPERB!
The steak was done just as I'd asked - medium rare. And the frites were served with the most DELICIOUS aioli mayonnaise.
All washed down with a great Belgian ale... doesn't get much better.

As mdonovan mentioned above, Hop Leaf offers a very tasty steak-frites dish, more French in style than Belgian in my opinion, but tasty nonetheless ( )... you need to get some greens separately...*

Chez Joel doesn't.

I really enjoy the Steak Frites at Kiki's Bistro at 900 N Franklin - simple, well prepared. Nice room to dine in.

Mon Ami Gabi has my vote! I also heard that Le Creperie on Clark St has a very good one too.

Le Sardine (across from Harpo Studios) has wonderful Steak Frites.

In the suburbs, I've been hard pressed to find better than Retro Bistro in Mt Prospect.

The steak frites at Bistro Campagne in Linclon Square is a tasty dish. I recently had it after enjoying mussels in a belgian ale broth for a starter. Made for a nice meal.

Once upon a time, La Tache in Andersonville had a good steak frites dish, too. I've only been there once since a change in chefs a while back and my meal wasn't great (I didn't have the steak frites on this most recent trip), so my prior good experience may not be relevant any more.

After having a great steak frites au poivre recently at Miramar in Highwood (and I am also a big fan of the version at Mon Ami Gabi), I thought I'd bump this old thread for current recommendations. I don't mind the typical preparation with maitre'd butter, but I usually go for an au poivre (peppercorn) type sauce. Since I'm in Highland Park, suburban locations near me are my first choice for convenience, but I'm open to any top suggestions.

Just updating that Mon Ami is still my go-to, but I've had a great (and reasonably-priced) steak frites at Maple & Ash, too.

Last week, at Pearl Brasserie, had a very good plate of steak frites (with excellent compound butter and frites). It was lunchtime, but with a meal like that, I had to have a glass of red. It seemed wrong not to, and I just always want to do the right thing.

Mon Ami Gabi is still my go to. Always done to perfection with a nice quality piece of meat and great frites. 5 different preparations to choose from (roquefort is my fav).

Sizeable enough that you don't need sides of green things to muck up the experience.

I've made a list of a lot of the French bistros in the area that people recommend for steak frites. I have to start venturing out more... I agree that Mon Ami Gabi (especially sitting outside at the location in Las Vegas) is still my favorite (I prefer mine done au poivre).

Cafe marie jeanne has a good version. Fries are excellent.

The Steak Frites at Francois Frankie in the Loop is excellent. It's not on the Web menu, but give them a call. I had it last month. They call their beef "Super Prime." Not sure if it's BS or not, but that was a GREAT steak frites.

I second Cafe marie jeanne. Also Boeufhaus on Western is delicious too.

Chez Benoit in Highland Park has good steak frites, but my favorites are at La Sardine and Le Bouchon. However if you're in Paris, the best I've ever had are at La Bourse et la Vie

I was not a fan of the steak frites at Cafe Marie Jeanne. Like others who have posted on this board, we noted some hits but some real misses during a recent meal there. The steak was cold (chilly cold, not lukewarm) and the fries, while blazing hot, were crazy salty (and I love salt).
Bistro Campagne used to have a good steak frites back in the day but I haven't been there in ages...

Bistro Campagne has very good steak frites. And nothing is prettier than their garden in the summer.

I'm intrigued by the Chez Benoit option and appreciate the suggestion. According to menu info online, though, the one steak on the menu appears to be steak au poivre with frites. Probably great, but different with the peppercorn crust and sauce than without.

True-it's not traditional, still delicious though!

That's good to hear, and I do appreciate the recommendation. It's much more conveniently located for me than most other places recommended, and HP is my old stomping grounds and always a sentimental journey.

Au poivre is my preferred way of getting steak frites. I am embarrassed to live in HP and not having tried Chez Benoit yet. I am a big fan of the version close by at Miramar in Highwood. Miramar does steak frites three ways (au poivre, maitre d'butter and with blue cheese).
