Every now and then we need to take a break from cutting edge cuisine, architectural presentations and Lilliputian portions. The Fawn Brook Inn is just the ticket to the time tunnel for classic continental cuisine. Located in a former hunting lodge in Allenspark, CO which is about 40 miles from Boulder, in the mountains. It's been around since about 1978 and it's owned by Hermann Groicher who is the Austrian chef and his Dutch wife Mieke. They have a small dog named Speck who roams the restaurant and acts as the greeter and is well behaved (unlike my two Mutts.)

Like I said, the throwback menu includes beef Wellington, curry lobster, vegetables en croute, roast duck, Dover sole, rack of lamb and other classic favorites. All are prepared with the freshest ingredients. A seafood terrine appetizer is fabulous. Accompanying vegies, unlike in the "olden days," are crisp and prepared with the lightest touch.

The dining room is rustic and elegant with varnished log walls and old-world decor. All in all, a great experience and fabulous food. The only problem is that after eating a full meal, you'll be hungry again in 4 or 5 days.

Prices are not cheap. Entrees range from about $32 to a whopping $60.
