I have the terrible burden of having to attend a conference in Hilton Head next week. Staying at the Westin and in search of something interesting for dinnner, crab cake sandwich, oyster roast, hole in the wall jerk kitchen?
    Anything would be welcome.
    Thanks.

As I posted in a previous Hilton Head post------------

    My fave:

    Hudson's on the Docks---

Great low country seafood place located in a former oyster factory. Lots of locals eat there, however, it might not pass the "non-touristy test"

We've been there several times and have enjoyed it--------

It's been a couple of years since I've been to Hilton Head, but I love a place called Captain woodys. It's a pub type place on the marina, a bit hard to find, but has great food and service. A fun place, you can eat in or sit out by the water and eat. Not anything fancy, just very good food.
Also for a more upscale type place, the one and only tapas rest. in Hilton Head. I really enjoyed this place, but prices are pretty high. Hope you find a good place and if you find something you love, please post and let us know.

Thanks for the info. I will try out a few places and report back.

Cito, I did try a search for Hilton Head before posting and came up empty. Thanks for finding that.

As a child, we went to Hilton Head almost annually. I haven't been for many years, but hope to go back this summer. Anyhow, there hasn't been much posting on this thread yet, so I figure I might as well provide some suggestions, although my experiences are a bit dated.

My parents used to leave the kids at the hotel while they had their favorite adult dinner at Alexander's. They used to get lots of business, and it's nestled in one of the plantations.

I enjoyed a very nice meal at Old Oyster Factory in more recent memory. In going to their website, I just found out that this is a sister restaurant of Alexanders. This restaurant was featured on national TV (Food Network, I think) because they have a great sunset, so try and go for that.

The above restaurants have yet another sister according to the Old Oyster website. This seems like a newer, more contemporary option. http://www.redfishofhiltonhead.com/index2.html

There is a popular bakery there, Signey's. I remember it having key lime stuff and also cafe lunch stuff.

Maybe check into these. Plus, if you're staying at the Westin, the concierge there should be able to confirm which suggestions are best.

Although off topic, if you have time, I would highly recommend renting bikes, which are really fun to ride along the ocean. Also, I've been on a great dolphin cruise that was very entertaining and not commercial.

    Please report back!!!

Good food is very difficult to find around Hilton Head. We tried Hudson's this summer and were not impressed. It was decent, but certainly nothing to write home about.

It was difficult for me to get away from the seminar by myself so my food visits were driven by group force rather than the lone foodie. So my experiences weren't what I wanted. We went to the Oyster Factory which I found to be a disappointment. It was a pretty location, but driven by the tastes of tourist trade turnover. I'd rate it on the equivalent of Red Lobster. Average food, lots of fried options.
The other night we went to Crazy Crab which wasn't bad. The oysters were good for being homogenized. The shrimp at least tasted fresh instead of frozen like the Factory. the clams were small but tasty.
One place I heard about on the last day, the Old Fort Pub sounded like a good possibility and I will try it on the next visit.
I'd say HH was a great place for golf if you're into that, but I'd drive to Savannah for fun food choices.
If you like to walk or run, the beach was great and the Westin very nice.

If it makes you feel better, I spent a week in Hilton Head last year and didn't have one memorable restaurant meal.

Everything was touristy and mediocre. Plus, it seems many families who are there (mine included) stay in hotel rooms and/or timeshares where there are kitchens and spend much of their vacations cooking food purchased at the grocery stores like Piggly Wiggly.
