Next weekend, The Chow Poodle will be gone and I have decided to take a road trip somewhere after the roaring success of my north-central Indiana road trip of a couple of weeks ago (I still haven't posted about it, but I've got pictures and descriptions ready to go as soon as I get a chance to write it up).

This is your chance to choose my next road trip. I'd like to go somewhere within a (full) day's drive so I can go, explore along the way and come back within a weekend.

The floor is open for suggestions.

Kansas City, but I like Mike's suggestion better.

Up to Minneapolis through Western Wisconsin? Very nice drive this time of year, good dining options in Twin Cities, plenty of fall farmers markets and roadside stands if you stay off the main highways, and lots of cheese factories along the way.

A trip to Mt Horeb, Monroe, New Glarus and Mineral Point is always nice. Plenty of cheese, scenic roads and small town bars with good food.

A trip to the Detroit area, down to Toledo for Tony Packo's and back. Eastern Market in Detroit on Saturday might be well worth visiting.

I'll vote for a trip to The Outdoorsman; see:

Madison Farmer's market, Stevens Point Brewery (5th oldest brewery in the country), and many cheese stops (try Charlie's House of Fine Cheese in Hazelhurst) along the way (I-90 -> US 51 -> Cty Rd M)

Agree with Detroit. I would skip Toledo in favor of Windsor, ON.

How bout a trip south to Murphysboro, IL for the best damn BBQ anywhere...17th St BBQ run by the legend himself Mike Mills, when I have some time I will post a complete review pic's included of this real deal diamond in the rough. Sure theres not much else to do but having just come from there , I can attest to it being worth every minute of the drive as it is truly a five star joint.

    Why stop in Detroit?

I always wanted to take a nice drive to Toronto when it was closer.

    someplace warmer.

I'm sure all the Marathon runners would appreciate that.

The Bride and I found New Harmony, Indiana to be pretty charming with a couple of decent restaurants and a nice hotel. You have to like visiting Utopian communities and some interesting new and old buildings, and it is a pretty long drive, but I think you might be able to combine it with a leisurely run down the Wabash to make a weekend of it.

Only went once, but we have always wanted to go back. Really a lovely and fascinating place.

Edit: You need to go to the website of the New Harmony Inn and Conference Center to find the nicer restaurant attached to the Inn. We stayed at the Inn and enjoyed it. The food, on the whole, is good but nothing that interesting or wonderful, just so you know. Better than average Illinois/Indiana downstate and with some pretensions when we went almost 10 years ago.
