I am going to a conference in Coronado, but wanted to get away and off the island at least once to take a walk around the Gas Lamp (we won't have a car so we'll be taking the ferry one evening). From searching on the boards here I have a list of places to check out on Coronado already such as

    -Peohe’s
    -Il Fornaio
(both of those are close to my conference so I hope to hit them for lunch)
    -Primavera
    -Crown Bistro
    -Miguel's

But, I haven't had any luck with the Gas Lamp area at all- if I did have a car I'd definitely try Old Town or La Jolla but I guess those will have to wait for a personal trip.

Any recommendations that are walkable after taking the ferry from Coronado?

I know there is a sushi joint called Taka. I haven't been to San Diego in a few years, but I know I sat at the bar there and remember the meal being satisfactory. My friends who lived in San Diego for years used to frequent this place.

The Gaslamp is filled with restaurants, most of which are looked upon with some disdain. My favorite restaurant in the Gaslamp (and really the only reason I go there for eating purposes) is a Persian restaurant named Bandar. Make sure to ask for an order of tahdig (crispy rice) - it's not on the menu, but they'll give it to you.

Another option is Oceanaire. I know, I know, it's a chain, but I enjoyed the one meal I ate there. Brian Malarkey of Top Chef Season 3 fame is the executive chef. They are famous for their crab cake.

Close by is a French restaurant named Cafe Chloe. It is about four blocks east of the Gaslamp but very walkable especially if you are used to walking in Chicago. I enjoy anything with the fries, and they have excellent lavender lemonade.
