My partner travels through Marengo about 3-4 times a month for business and kept lamenting that there was no good place for coffee along the route, Marengo being about the half way point along the route towards Walworth Wisc. I did some Googling and came up with Flatlander's in Marengo so Saturday we took an exploratory trip there. All the times driving by, she never noticed Flatlander's and would not have stopped as the outside is nothing special other than some funky colors. Inside is a small market featuring Illinois grown items and wines. There are about 10 tables scattered about what was once a department store with some of the displays and counters still in place. You place your order at a old time butcher counter and the dishes are brought out to you in casual baskets. We got there about 11:30 and the place was pretty full and while there about 10 people came in for carry out orders. I had the Cuban sandwich, freshly grilled and she had articoke and grilled red pepper sandwich. Both were excellant and we could each only finish half. Both came with freshly made potato chips that were really interesting. They are home made, the sizes and thickness were all uneven, some were crisp and some were a little mushy but all in all, they were very tasty! The link below is to their menu. She plans on stopping every time she passes through, she said the latte she tried was very good and the pastries all looked tempting.

We returned to Flatlander's on Thursday, 10/30. This time I had a Reuben with thin sliced, lean corned beef, swiss, kraut and the traditional dressing on a crsply grilled marble rye and my partner had a veggie sandwich of home made mozzarella, tomato, basil and a light pesto dressing. Both sandwiches came with home made potato chips which are fried to order. There was a brisk carry out business going on and several tables filled at a early lunch time of 11:15. Hours and address are in my post above.
