I was born and raised in South Carolina. I am a vegetarian now. As I said at the LTH party last Sunday that does not mean that my heart would not jump now for vegetarian chitlins, a/k/a chitterlings. There seem to be a number of decent chopped barbecue/pulled pork-style vegetarian offerings so on that I am okay.

Growing up Friday's meant getting off of school/work and occassionally running to Duke's BBQ or the Brown Derby in my home town for a plate of chopped BBQ w/ white bread & sweet tea. That BBQ was not too sweet but not too vinegary (a problem I always had with N.C. BBQ, unless my grandmother had a fresh ham & we made it ourselves). There is absolutely no heat to it either. It really is a bit of sauce as a "cherry on top" of delicious fresh cooked pork.

My mother says when she was pregnant she had a plate from the Brown Derby most days.

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina ...
