The wife and I are going to Holland, MI for the tulip festival in May. Has anyone been? I'm looking for good recommendations for chow (and other places to visit) in the Holland area. We'll be there 3 - 4 days. Of course we'll be touring around the area a bit as well as staying in Holland proper.

    Hi Steve,

Antonius and I were briefly in Holland during last year's tulip festival -- we didn't know about it in advance, but just decided to stop off in Holland on our way back from Ann Arbor. We had a hard time finding a place open for lunch on Sunday (Mother's Day, actually) and ended up at a diner-like place for eggs, etc, which was fine but not really "destination" dining or brunching. I believe it was called The Windmill, and it's right on the main shopping street (8th St?).

The tulips were indeed in bloom and very pretty, though, and there was an outdoor concert and some nice shops to browse through (bookstore, toy store). Afterwards we drove out to the state park at the beach, which was spectacularly beautiful on that warm day, with a very wide, sandy beach.

Have fun and let us know where you find to eat, so we can do better on our next visit.

    Amata

Steve, you *have* to duck over to Saugatuck (the next town over) and go to Marro's pizza. I know, I know- leaving Chicago and having pizza? But you will not be disappointed.

    Pereddies
447 Washington Ave, Holland, MI 49423
    (616) 394-3061

Last there about 5 years ago. Its a bakery. Its a wine store. Its a kitchen equipment store. Its a restaurant. It takes reservations (necessary--its popular and small). Its in town, near a college in an older n'hood.

The wine choices are good, decanted at table at a reasonable price. Surprisingly, the meatballs were near excellent. The biscotti were ok. For Holland MI, this is all saying quite a lot.

There are numerous factories and food processors in Holland, so I was not surprised to see Vietnamese, Hispanic etc eateries sprinkled around.

Pereddies', given the locale, would be my pick of the litter.
Chicago is my spiritual chow home
