I finally had the chance to document what I consider to be Stockholm's best hotdog stand!

    Image

Östermalms korvspecialist. Not much to look at but the German owner and his family has been offering about 40 types of sausages to Stockholmer since the 60's. I've been dozens of times but have honestly never ordered anything but the Thuringer Weisswurst (his first recommendation to me). I'm not sure of his supplier or recipe but it's peppery, has a hint of tarragon in it and borders on perfection.

    Image

These sausages take time. Upon ordering, the sausage if found somewhere in the collection of plastic bags and refridgerators and placed on the griddle-press. And there they sit for about 10 minutes.

    Image

Nearing the ten-minute mark, the insides of a half baguette are removed and two sauces (one slightly spicy, the other a mild tomato sauce) are spooned in.

    Image

Finally, the grilled weisswurst is squeezed into its bun and topped with saurkraut.

(As an aside, Doug from Hot Doug's seems like a great, friendly guy but I know where I'd rather spend ten minutes chatting and waiting for a sausage to cook!)

    How's it taste?

    Incredible!

It looks like a wonderful hot dog stand. Great pictures and documentation. In my world of travel, I can fly Continental. Today's rates are $1579 r/t with one stop, flying out of Chicago. With pre planning, I can cut that cost in half. With the remaining funds, I'll vacation for 10 days, rent a Volvo XC70, and sample some of those different sausages. I'll be in Sweden next year and plan on making your recommendation one of my stops.

    Thanks.

    Bridgeston,

Terrific pictures and I agree 100%, though if Stockholm isn't in the cards a closer alternative, at least for Chicagoans, would be Rosamunde in San Francisco.

    Delicious lineup of interesting sausage.

Both prepared and served by a lovely young lady with startlingly blue eyes.*

Not to mention Rosamunde is next door to one of the better bars in San Francisco.

Well folks, if you’re planning a trip you will have to hurry! The hotdog stand is bound for destruction. The city is doing maintenance work underneath the stand and apparently it’s in their contract that thees things can happen. So they will have to close down by the first of august.

The stand operators got a notice in may that said that they should be gone by august.

Either way, the rally shocking thing is that it is unknown at this point if they will get to build a new stand when the work is done(!)

You may be in Sweden and we are in Chicago, but city governments can sometimes work capriciously wherever they are.

In case any external validation was needed here, I put this to the test. My friend Steve visited Chicago for an afternoon of eating before we took off for Stockholm. One of our stops was Hot Doug's, where we discovered that Doug may have alligator and foie on the menu, but doesn't offer a seafood-based sausage. He does have a vegetarian dog, but Steve deemed it unappealing sounding* and we headed to Franks n' Dawgs instead. One week later in Stockholm, he was more than excited to order a vegetarian dog from this young lady.

Myself? I stopped by twice during my short stay in Stockholm.

Really a fantastic sausage stand. Steve said the vegetarian sausage itself kind of sucked (he says all veggie sausage does), but that sum total (including the lovely sausage lady, I'm sure) was awesome.

    * Reading "Meatless...and delicious!" on the board after reading "Foie Gras and Sauternes Duck Sausage with Truffle Aioli, Foie Gras Mousse and Fleur de Sel" or "Apple and Maple Smoked Chicken Sausage with Bitter Orange Sweet Mustard and Cocoa Cardona Cheese" is a bit of a let-down
