just curious

This is the board that I usually look at the most, and it's kind of annoying to see Kansas City and Pittsburgh stickies proudly sitting on top of this thing every time I visit. Out of all the magnificent places to eat "Beyond Chicagoland", why do these two get to hold the place of honor? It makes it seem very depressing to ever leave the boat - "Wow, Pittsburgh or KC? I think I'll just stay home".

Those boards were started by ex-Chicagoan LTHers who took the initiative to do so when they moved out of town to KC and Pittsburgh respectively. As you probably know, there's a lot more on the Beyond Chicago board than just stuff on those two cities.

Well yeah, I get that. But all due respect, does that give them a perpetual place of honor on top of this board? I mean, Geo is bicitual KC/Montreal - let's get rid of KC and bump up Montreal, it's a much more interesting food city.

Seriously. Think about it. Anyone can eat well outside Chicago in New York, San Francisco, or Montreal. But where is it that you need a bit of help? In Wichita (thanks, MikeG), in Cleveland (thanks ReneG and PIGMON), on the road in the Midwest (thanks, Cathy2 and ReneG), on the South Coast of Massachusetts (thanks, tatterdemalion), and wherever else Jeff B goes on business and eats and reports back!

The next time you are in North Platte, NE, or Cadillac, MI, post a question here. I can point you to some decent fried chicken or pasties.

I agree with your larger point, but you could just as easily say, "Anyone can eat well outside of New York in Chicago, etc." Well, yes, anyone can, in theory -- so why do we have LTHForum?

As someone who often teeters on the line separating snotty from funny, I first thought you were too far on the snotty side, but now you've now moved back to funny. It's a fluid line.

Didn't realize it was such a sensitive subject. It was just a suggestion to, you know, uncalcify things and maybe make an improvement. IMO those stickies serve no function that a simple search couldn't accomplish and are a constant reminder of the usual parochialism. Lesson learned - it's your ball.

So instead of going directly to the board, use the "View new posts" link and you'll never see those stickies! That's mostly what I do, or search for what I am looking for (Portland, Vienna, etc). I had to go look at the board to see what you were objecting to, since I almost never go straight into a board

I think you're missing the point Eddie, ol' boy. It's not that anyone here is showing preferential treatment toward Kansas City or Pittsburgh, someone took the initiative to start LTH boards in those cities (just so happens, by coincidence, I'm sitting at a computer in Kansas City right now replying to this thread). They are separate boards populated primarily by people who live in those cities. In other words, if you used those links you would see similar forums to those on LTH/Chicago, but instead of "Eating out in Chicago", and "Beyond Chicago", you would see "Eating out in Kansas City/Pittsburgh", and "Beyond KC/P-Burgh", etc.

If you moved to another city and wanted to start your own board you would be free to do so. And if said board had the same legitimacy as the Pittsbutgh and KC indexes, I suppose your new board would also be given a sticky here at LTH.

EDIT: Let me amend for accuracy. After looking at the Pittsburgh sticky, I stand corrected--only the KC thread has a link to a separate, equal but different LTHForum for that city. The Pittsburgh thread is merely a guide (though updated fairly regularly, I imagine) to dining in the Pittsburgh area.

Greets all, from a fully-snowed-in Long Island, where I'm holidaying at my MIL's place.

I just discovered this thread, duh!

Seems to me that some history is useful here, too. Before Aaron moved to KC and started the LTH/KC board, that town had some board cred; indeed, it was already of song and legend around here (see, for example, this). Ditto Pittsburgh, before sazerac landed there.

So it wasn't the least odd that both these places were of interest to LTHers in general.

Moreover, both KC and Pittsburgh are places that many of us get to visit more than randomly. So the special topics are of interest in that way, as well.

Probably North Platte or Missoula wouldn't score on either of these two criteria.

Of course, as I read what I just wrote, Fast Eddie's remark 'why not Montréal?' comes to mind. Maybe I should take some time to set up a stickie cubbyhole for Montréal/Québec. What do folks think about that? (At the very least, I could make a collection of all the threads where either of these topics were prime focus.)

I'll be back in Montréal for the season, starting Friday—lord willin' and the crick don't rise.
