I'm assuming that you mean places to eat, and not just "things to do"?

I've been to all of those places, and you should have a good time in each of them. As far as food goes, Vienna has a fantastic market. It is enormous and has tons of great produce, cheese, fish, meat, etc... And definitely go to the original Julius Meinl in the city center - it's awesome.

Munich also has an excellent market, with great places to get a sandwich and a beer as well. Good produce and such there, too. You must get pretzels while in Munich - they are the best that I've had anywhere. And also beer - how could I forget that? They also have great ice cream. There's a great place right on the main platz that's always crowded ( and has really good eis ).

Food-wise, all I remember about Rothenburg was that I ate at a good Chinese restaurant ( really ). In Salzburg, I only recall eating in the apartment that I stayed in.

Austria has some of my favorite wine in the world. If you've never had any Austrian wine before, you MUST try it. The Gruner Veltliners are of course wonderful, but the reds really stand out to me. Definitely try a St. Laurent - it's a great red ( Umathum and Gesselman are great ones ). Also try a Zweigelt and a Blaufrankish - both types are really good. Germany makes some awesome whites, too, but wine isn't as prevalent in Munich as it is in the Mosel/Rhine region.

You should enjoy the trip. I love Munich and have been there several times, There's lots of outdoor things to do - ride a bike ( or take a bike tour ) if you are able. It's a great walk-able/hike-able city. I love Vienna also, and it's also highly walk-able. Salzburg is very nice, and Rothenburg is quaint, but IMO it's not worth much more than a day, as you can see really everything in one day.

    Have fun!

in Vienna, don't miss the Naschmarkt -- closes down in the evening, though, it's more of a lunch-browsing place. Lots of delis and snacks.

Also, after days of heavy, sauced, expensive food, go to Schnitzelwirt
Hubcap-sized schnitzel at low prices (E6.80 for an unnacompanied Wiener Schnitzel, 10-something with a bunch of salads and potatoes, called the "Hamburger Schnitzel"). Perfectly seasoned, perfectly crispy, more than you could expect to eat in a sitting (they provide plastic bags and waxed paper to every table take them home).

There's a Vienna thread here somewhere, which I copied the above description from.

The Münchener Ratskeller—the resto in the city hall—is excellent. Best liver and onions I've ever had in my life. But, if it's first time for you, get the Bauerteller, which will have a selection of meats and potatoes formatted several ways, plus red cabbage. Great fun.

In Vienna make sure to dine at Plachutta and order the Tafelspitz, an Austrian delicacy. It's incredible.

Just be sure you order it at the right places. There's a fine line between incredible and inedible*
I had one that was rather shoe-like, served with some really good applesauce and horseradish, but still, shoe-like.

In Vienna, be sure to visit a heuriger, a kind of local tavern serving *only* its own wine from the previous vintage. Quite a treat!

And, in Salzburg, most esp. in the surrounding mountains, look for rustic taverns serving "most", a kind of mixed-fruit hard cider. Wonderful stuff!

We spent an absolutely lovely day wandering around Wachau, just outside of Vienna--I can't recommend it enough. Delicious wine and other samples throughout the town. Some interesting sites to hike through. Don't miss the just-bottled sparkling gruner veltliners--we were there in the spring when it was still fairly chilly--I can only imagine how refreshing they would taste in summer. I have no notes of names of places but I do remember having drinks and the austrian version of "tapas" (don't recall what was included but they were all intriguing) while sipping sparkling wine and watching the racing currents of the Danube sitting at a table by a huge picture window. Definitely worth the trip out of the city.

We had a terrific meal at the Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg. This is a 600-year-old building that's now a 5-star hotel. The dining room is decorated with antiques and doodads and, surprisingly, felt very comfy. The meal is just long enough ago that I don't recall enough details (although I still remember having saddle of venison). Austrian cuisine. A great time all the way 'round.
