My brother and his wife are at the end of week one of a six week Australian vacation.
This will also include a week in New Zealand. With his permission I'm posting his comments about the food along the way.
The Ghan
We boarded The Ghan in Alice. Leaving for 24 hour train ride to Adelaide. We have a sleeper cabin- a closet with two narrow bunks. We will find out how much we like each other. There is a bar. The last meal in Alice, carol had a burger, I had the Aussie mixed grille. In order- water buffalo, very good steak; emu sausage, good but could have been any sausage; kangaroo, not bad; crocodile, wouldn't do it again, and last camel, chewed for a long time, I'd have to be very hungry. Most restaurants have camel on menu. There are about 1 million wild camels here. We saw wild caravan (a group of them) near Ayers Rock few days ago. The gov't spends $$ slaughtering and selling meat to Saudia Arabia. They also promote it here. They are not native. In the 1860's they were brought here to help explore the center of the country. Horses couldn't handle the long stretches without water. The camels came with cameleers who knew how to handle them. The camels and camelleers were imported from Afghanistan, hence the name of the train--The Ghan. The engine has a big camel painted on it.
