What is the measure of a city? Its climate? Certainly worth considering. How easy is is to get around? Important enough. The quality of the local orchestra? Perhaps.
Is it possible to purchase a decent bowl of Matzah bowl soup? That is it.
In my experience, the two best Jewish deli's in town - and sad to say - the only two Jewish Deli's in town (please correct me if I am wrong as I believe Kraemer's on the west side has long-since closed) serve up a decent bowl...but not in the same league as what can be had 80 miles to the south. That is why. despite it's fine orchestra and temperate climate, I have always considered Milwaukee to be provincial.
Yesterday, in a fit of recklessness, I gave Benji's another try. After all, it has been a while since the last attempt.
I'm glad I did. A decade did the trick. They now know how to make an honest matzah ball and plop it into a pleasant broth.
Milwaukee is on the map.
Next up is Jakes. I will report back.
