Might anyone here have recommendations for places accessible on foot from the Brown campus? Thanks as always!

Transiting through Providence on my way to Boston and then to Cape Cod. Skipped lunch at Midway, and then headed immediately to Venda Ravioli.

We arrived around 430 to find they had stopped table service at 330. Not necessarily a big deal, because you can still buy cold salads and such at the deli counter and then sit at a table to eat them. But we decided to try Venda's sister restaurant, Costantino's, across the little square. It does not open until 5, so we stocked up for later and Venda's then headed over.

Nice old apartment building rehabbed as a restaurant - pressed brass trim above the entry and on the arches into the dining room and bar is very lovely.

Food was very good, too. The Bride started with an excellently restrained caesar salad, of the each leaf perfectly coated school, while I was more sinful - burrata and prosciutto. The melting cheese was the star, though the serving was very generous in both components, and the chiffonade of basil added a nice touch. A storm blew through and took out the power, so we were not sure if the meal was going to end there, but after 10 minutes the light and music miraculously returned, and with it our hopes for a meal.

Continuing her search for simplicity, the Bride moved on to penne with vodka sauce. As my Ravioli Aragosta (sp?) started with a similar sauce for a base, I did not officially try her pasta, though I did eventually taste a touch of the sauce. Good, but not really much like mine. By the time the lobster was added to my sauce, along with a touch more butter I think, it became a much richer, deeper sauce. Ravioli were perfect little pillows of lobstery deliciousness.

It was a perfect way to arrive.

On a previous visit, we started with a New York System Hot Dog and Coffee Milk. I cannot remember which location we visited. My verdict - the dilapidated charm of the joint, and the friendly old guys working there far surpassed the food. It was not bad, and it certainly was a bargain - both of us ate for something like $7. But I have no need to go back.

I too will be in Providence the second week in May and need some information. I will be there Monday thru Friday. Not really looking for "touristy" spots. Looking for "locals favorites".

    Thanks in advance!
