Town over in Lynn (city of sin), you'll find quite a nice Cambodian restaurant, Apsara Angkor (f/k/a Mittapheap). Avoid getting gringo'd and request the funk, particularly with dishes like prahok k'tis, a sorta kissing cousin to nam prik ong. Their sour soups and salads are strong.

Another town over, Malden, you'll find a real gem in the Sri Lankan & South Indian restaurant
Biryani Park. If you have the ability to plan the meal in advance, call in an order for lamprais a day ahead, and you'll be rewarded with a diverse sampling of their 'curries', all quite unique in spicing and textures.

For a real slice of local culture, you really shouldn't miss the
Trackside Bar & Grill in Peabody, a Portuguese tavern. Nothing fancy but straightforward solid preps of Portuguese classics with an excellent hang.

I
recently mentioned in passing the North Shore style roast beef sandwich, and there are many, many places up there that serve it which are still unfamiliar to me and many people outside of the immediate nabe. I'm hoping to check a lot of these places out, though I imagine the ROI will not be favourable. However,
Nick's in Beverly is a standout in the class.

Of course, you also have all the famous clam shacks up in Ipswich and Essex to get a pile of bellies, which you should do.
