In just a couple of weeks we are attending a wedding in Danversport, staying in Danvers, would like to explore Salem. Does anyone have any suggestions for less than rudimentary food in this area? So far I find a lot of thing that seem to be along the lines of Applebee's. I'd like to do better but not get too pricey. So, are ther any mid-range joints or hidden gems around here?

Thanks, I knew I could depend on you!

Town over in Lynn (city of sin), you'll find quite a nice Cambodian restaurant, Apsara Angkor (f/k/a Mittapheap). Avoid getting gringo'd and request the funk, particularly with dishes like prahok k'tis, a sorta kissing cousin to nam prik ong. Their sour soups and salads are strong.

Another town over, Malden, you'll find a real gem in the Sri Lankan & South Indian restaurant Biryani Park. If you have the ability to plan the meal in advance, call in an order for lamprais a day ahead, and you'll be rewarded with a diverse sampling of their 'curries', all quite unique in spicing and textures.

For a real slice of local culture, you really shouldn't miss the Trackside Bar & Grill in Peabody, a Portuguese tavern. Nothing fancy but straightforward solid preps of Portuguese classics with an excellent hang.

I recently mentioned in passing the North Shore style roast beef sandwich, and there are many, many places up there that serve it which are still unfamiliar to me and many people outside of the immediate nabe. I'm hoping to check a lot of these places out, though I imagine the ROI will not be favourable. However, Nick's in Beverly is a standout in the class.

Of course, you also have all the famous clam shacks up in Ipswich and Essex to get a pile of bellies, which you should do.

Near Danvers in Beverly, The Anchor Pub & Grille is a so-called dive bar with pretty good food. Lobster rolls & steak tips are standouts. Drinks are generous & cheap. Def worth a try.

    This is great! Thanks folks!

Keep the recomendations coming if you can. It seems that Danvers is dead for dining. I've got my fingers crossed. Beverly sounds fine, or if I can twist people's palates...

    Thanks again.

Just was in Beverly MA for the weekend visiting a great niece who was born 4 months ago.

    Went to 4 spots:
    A&B Burger
Good burger joint, I had the El Guapo, cooked to a perfect MR, with grilled onions, guacamole. Get the sea salt fries, onion rings are tiny tiny slivers and oversalted/fried.

    Barrel House American Bar

    La Victoria Tacqueria
Serves tacos, burritos and tortas. Our group focused on tortas, 3 of us ordering the Choriqueso (chorizo & melted Oaxacan cheese w/rajas) and one ordering the Victoria (ham & carnitas). Really melty & gooey sandwiches, very good. I do like the tortas I get in Chicago more as they aren't gooey messes.

The following morning, picked up bagels & cream cheese at Bagel World in Peabody. These are big bagels and I thought would be all bread, thankfully there was a good chew to them. Sesame & everything were our favorites.
There are number of Bagel World locations in the area. FYI they don't have lox, only lox spread, I had to pick up at market. http://www.bagelworld.net/

I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.
