I'll be in Freeport this weekend and was hoping to find a good place for lunch. A diner with pie sounds good but if there's something else chow-ish, please let me know. Thanks!

I was in Freeport over the weekend to view a catering/concession truck, and while that didn't pan out, as well as my search for a good piece of pie, I did get to meet with Karen of Harbach Meats.

They don't have Sunday hours, but Karen was kind enough to meet me at the small storefront located on the farm. The pigs and cows are fed a no hormone/no steroid diet, and they actually get to walk around outside and stare at the geeked-out city girls slogging through the mud to pet them.

The prices on the website are a bit dated. Some of the things we purchased were priced higher (ie flank steak was $6.29), but still comparable to grocery store prices. We hope to use them as a source for pork shoulder for bbq, and will be conducting taste tests soon. We also purchased 1" thick center cut pork chops, a whole tenderloin, brats, beef shortribs, flank and strip steaks. Results will be posted as we eat our experiments :-) They can cryovac your purchases if you plan on longer term freezer storage. Karen's husband spoke to me at length about the diet and care of the pigs. Very nice people, proud of their product, and I'm looking forward to cooking it.

(ps. Peter Kaminsky's "Pig Perfect" made me want to find a supplier just like Harbach. I highly recommend it)
