closest best cuban sandwich would be @ versailles around federal and forest hill or there abouts. open 24 hrs and great cuban coffee as well.
otherwise, miami.
best food in my opinion in the area you'll be in hands down is capt charlies "reef grill" on federal above donald ross, right in the neighborhood. dayboat fish, prepared simply. i'd go w/yellowtail, hog or mutton snapper w/the blk beans and rice w/veg. pompano is also good as are the tempura grouper cheeks which are outstanding. so's the baked oysters and the clams w/chorizo, leeks, garlic and corn. a place to share many items.
i used to have a place there (pbg) called etre on the ne corner of pga and prosperity. now it's owned by carmine's, a local pimp/restauranteur. not a nice guy, but the food's pretty good. chef is a brit from the ritz or 4 seasons, forgot the name of it though. i could find out if you're interested. he's got a few of restaurants on that st, mainly mediocre. this one is behind the mkt, which isn't bad either. this one's the nicest of his places though. any local should know it.
