Tonight was the last meal of the New York LTH rump under my aegis but with the essential support of Matthew, Pan, and Hammer. Hopefully these good friends will continue to dine together.
At Pan's suggestion, we decided to end the year at Skyway, a Malaysian restaurant near Chinatown. Pan had lived for two years in various cities in Malaysia and was our noble guide. While I won't write a full review, Skyway is one of the better ethnic meals I have had all year, and those who had experienced both Penang and Skyway found the latter superior.
I was impressed by the complexity of the spice. These dishes did not have a deep burn (although the heat was there), but the other spices created a richness that I rarely find in hot food.
We ordered Roti Telur (roti with fried eggs, often served for breakfast), Chicken Satay, Beef Satay, Kang Kung Belacan (Chinese spinach with shrimp paste) - really delightful vegetable dominated dish but with enough shrimp paste to make it interesting, Nasi Lemak (coconut rice with accompaniments, including anchovies, potatoes, chicken, and peanuts) - our favorite dish, squid in special sauce - plenty of heat, but not overwhelmed by the chilis, and Crab in Special Aromatic Flavor - another complex mix of spices. The meal came to $21/each and we left sated, but not overwhelmed.
Can the real LTH be any better than its fawning Manhattan imitators?
