With some friends I make an annual pilgrimage to Spring Green, Wisconsin, to attend the always excellent American Players Theater. Less excellent are the local dining choices, which have inevitably been disappointing. We always enjoy a good meal in New Glarus either on the way up or back, but haven't found anything beyond the mediocre in the immediate Spring Green vicinity. Any suggestions?

I'm guessing that the lack of replies to the last inquiry does not bode well for the dining options around Spring Green. Nevertheless, I'm heading up there this weekend. If anyone has a recommendation, or if cowdery has a post-trip report, I'd be grateful. I'm willing to travel a bit for something interesting. Thanks.

Hi - husband and I took a couple of day trips to Spring Green when we lived in Madison. I will confirm that there really isn't much to recommend in or close-by. Don't know what your plans are, but Madison has a very nice Sat. morning farmer's market all around the Capital square. You could stroll around and pick up cheese, bread, sausage, berries, etc.. and bring a picnic to Spring Green and have a brunch/lunch in Madison before heading off. Just a thought. Enjoy the area - it is really beautiful this time of year!

We have eaten at The Feed Mill in Mazomanie several times and have not been disappointed. Normally I would say that it is much better than you would expect, but this is genuinely a very nice, if pretty straight forward, restaurant. They even have an interesting wine list. Pot roast is the specialty, but walleye is always good as are the Amish dishes. Cute, if kitschy, waiting area-good bar.
