Hi all. My husband is planning a trip to DC in February and wanted to find a restaurant serving colonial-style food (similar to what you might get at Williamsburg, or if anyone recalls James Tavern in Deerfield from years past). You know, peanut soup, Smithfield ham, roasted salmon, roasted meats and game, oysters, crabcakes - stuff like that.

The best we've come up with is 1789, which really serves fancy contemporary food in a colonial setting, or Gadsby's in Alexandria, which serves high-end pub grub in a really old tavern.

Any other thoughts or is this a fool's errand?

I've been to 1789 in the past. I vaguely remember it as good, but I don't think it is a Colonial theamed restaurant. It's more of a fine dining establishment.

I think Gadsby's has some (adapted) colonial offerings on their menu, so that might be his best bet. Certainly the building is the right age.

I believe "1789" is in a 19th century townhouse, despite the name.

Another restaurant in a 19th century building is the restaurant in the Tabard Inn. I haven't eaten there in years, but it used to be pretty good, and the setting is quite nice. But they, too, serve contemporary American food, nothing from earlier eras.

Of course, if you want to go pre-Colonial in Washington, there's also this option, as reported by chapulin :)
