My family wants to spend a few nights vacationing and is in search of a chic, luxurious, bed and breakfast/hotel near a beautiful beach and of course serving delicious food. If great shopping and good restaurants are near as well, perfect. A remote, relaxing place might be better than a touristy location. Does such a thing exist in the US? If not, any islands in the Caribbean? We prefer places with less than 8 hours of flight time. Thanks!

We stayed at the beautiful ranch in Carmel, California now owned by Clint Eastwood:

I believe we stayed in the bunkhouse, if memory serves me correctly, which had two nicely appointed, comfortable bedrooms and a wonderful porch with wooden rockers where we sat watching the sheep graze in the meadow, and beyond them we could see the ocean. I don't think they don't serve breakfast there, but there's no end to the chic (and very good) eateries in Carmel, some of which were especially delightful for breakfast. There is a good steakhouse type restaurant on the ranch premises, and Eastwood himself often shows up to hang out at the bar (we didn't see him while we were there, though). You of course have access to great beaches in Carmel, spectacular coastline to drive along, and the town itself, with its multi-million dollar "jewel box" homes, ritzy shops and art galleries, is fun to explore if that is your cup of tea, and though it's clearly a monied place it's also a very artsy, casual and relaxed one (though we were there in the spring; it may get uncomfortably crowded in summer, but I don't know that). I would recommend flying into the easily navigated San Jose airport and make the drive down to Carmel, which will take you through Santa Cruz and Monterey; a more beautiful drive is hard to find. Of course, if you really want a b&b there are lots of those, too, to be had in Carmel and many are on the extremely luxurious side, I would guess.

I haven't stayed here, but I had an excellent lunch in the restaurant. It's in Big Sur and is remarkably beautiful. No great shopping, but an amazing place for a relaxing few days. If I remember correctly, children are not allowed.
