My grandfather was a potato farmer on the very eastern part of Long Island, NY on the north fork. My sisters and I spent our summers there until we began college. My grandad died in 1987 and I haven't visited since. I am told that the once rural area is now filled with wineries and many more tourists, although not as tourist-ridden as the south fork (Hamptons, etc.).
My sisters and I have scheduled a return trip and are excited to relive our summers on the farm-now winery! This is a long shot, but I'm hoping that amongst this savvy group, somebody knows of great places to eat east of Riverhead. My favorite memory is a place call Fisherman's Rest. They served awe-inspiring soft-shelled crabs in season, and a decent New York style pizza. Alas, they are closed.
Any suggestions? My tastebuds thank you.

I've done some time on the North Fork winery circuit. Pindar is very local and very commercial at the same time. Some nice, good-value wines. But my favorite remains Macari. Good people, and some great wines. Their cab franc is excellent, and they've made some spectacular viognier in the past, altho' they've had some trouble with their vines. It's been a while, so perhaps the viognier is back on line. Pretty place.

The Cutchogue Diner is lovely. Be sure to give it a try.

Definitely try Vine Street Cafe in Shelter Island. I've heard great things about Gerry Hayden (formerly of Aureole) and Claudia Fleming's (Gramercy Tavern) place the North Fork Table and Inn in Southold though I haven't been yet.

In Greenport, Frisky Oyster is okay bistro food and they have a friendly corkage policy. There is also a new restaurant, wine bar called Vine I think that has a nice selection of N Fork wines. Food I have heard is good to excellent but cannot vouch. But a cool looking place.
