Is Breakfast all day a Chicago thing?

I am a Bartender and thus a late sleeper as is one of my traveling companions. My third friend is and early riser, but by the time we all wake and have gotten ready it's usually not till after 12. I noticed when we were in downtown Nashville we couldn't find a place to get breakfast. I have also noticed this in other cities i have visited. I know places like craker barrel, Bob Evans etc. offer breakfast all day, but i prefer privately owned places, especially neighborhood diners.

That's a good question. It could well be a thing belonging to cities where big plants run three shifts and it's always morning for somebody.

If I want breakfast, I usually head to the nearest diner 'cause they usually serve it up all day. Loveless Cafe in Nashville serves breakfast all day, but it's not very close to downtown.

Part of it may be that Nashville, and a lot of other Southern cities, have a higher percentage of "steamtable" restaurants than does Chicago. There are a lot of "meat and threes" around and the kitchen staff is working to keep up as opposed to preparing special orders.

Just a theory.

No, it's also a Detroit-area thing, and as was said elsewhere on the thread, the best places to find breakfast all day are at the diners (and the Coney Islands, which are pretty much the same thing here).

Thank God for these places, since that sudden urge for bacon and eggs can and will strike at the craziest of hours.

I agree with JLawrence. It is a rarity to find the 24 hour greek diner in the deep south. You're more likely to find the meat and three place that may serve breakfast. |Defibnitely serves lunch and closes around 3 pm.

When I moved here from New York, I really missed the freshly made bacon and egg sandwiches on a good kaiser roll that I had become acustomed to picking up on the way to the office from the train station in the morning.
