I'm going to a conference in Athens OH mid-Summer. Going to be there 4. Whole. Days. I am already in Fear and Trembling lest starve there... Can anyone allay my Fear and quiet my Trembling?

    TIA!

Sooo, you like wine and are looking for something good to read? Maybe *this* will do the trick! :)

This may not (and probably should not) do anything to allay your fears, but you will be close to the home of Bob Evans in Rio Grande, Ohio.

Ah.... the Harvard on the Hocking. One of my favorite places, and some of the best years of my life were spent in Athens, Ohio. It's been awhile since I have been there, and I'm sure a lot has come and gone - but here are some recommendations:

Bagel Street Deli - right on Court Street. I recall these being some tasty bagel sandwiches which they would steam and wrap in tin foil. Good quick, edible lunch

    27 South Court Street
    Athens, Ohio 45701

The Buggies!! - I have no idea what buggies are slinging eats these days, but peruse the buggy carts for some Gyros, pizza, sandwiches, etc. The Burrito Buggy was always legendary. I would always get the black bean, chicken chili..... and I was usually several drinks deep. Open late!!

    Corner of Court and Union

Casa Nueva - sort of a hippie, Mexican joint. They would always have live local music in the past. Cool place, okay food.

    6 West State Street
    Athens, Ohio 45701

Miller's Chicken - I always heard it was good..... but never had it.

    235 West State Street
    Athens, Ohio 45701

Gold Star Chili - Cincy chili, coneys, and 3-way!! In many opinions, better then Skyline Chili.

    70 W Union St
    Athens, Ohio

7 Sauces - known as the "gourmet" restaurant in Athens. Whenever my parents visited, we went here.

    66 North Court Street
    Athens, Ohio

You'll find less franchises on Court Street. Enjoy the beautiful town, and I would love to hear a report.

I have not dined there, but Salaam is a newish pan-Subcontinent/M.E. restaurant at which the lovely and talented writer of beloved food blog, Tigers and Strawberries, cooks.

    ---

I can't believe 7 Sauces is still in existence: as opined above...it's Athens' "fine dining" place...I always gave them a big...EHhhhhhhhh....

    ---

Casa Nueva (or, simply "Casa"): not for those seeking "authenticity," but an interesting look into the Athens/Appalacian worker initiatives. It's longlived and friendly, however, unless they've completely revamped their understanding of Mexican cuisines you'll be noshing more on good faith than great eats. It's a landmark of sorts on the Athens scene.

    ---

I, too, have fond memories of the buggies, but wouldn't recommend them to a visitor necessarily

    ---

contrary to popular belief(i.e. those who don't know what they're talking about), Athens, OH has a storied history of diverse restos(many more than I can think of right this second...and, again, I'm not certain what's still around)

    ---

Avalanche Pizza comes recommended by others(it was after my time) and multiply awarded

    ---

If China Fortune is still kicking(it is! tho' who knows if the same great cooks work in the kitchen)...you might experience superb Chinese-American favorites

Maybe try Lui-Lui; offering both a woodburning oven for whimsical pizzas and sometimes bizarre mash-ups of Chinese and Italian

and, then, of course if you absolutely must...there's all the chain food a heart desires

    ---

Athens, OH is a lush, Vietnam of green in the Summer...if you've never been you oughta be pleasently surprised: there's also a lauded locavore, farming, and market community

no addresses, but you can google the names I offer

(if one digs deep enough it offers the reader tons of information into the Athens gastronomical scene...if you know anything about OU's illustrious drop-out communities, mysticism, arts, and activism none of this will come as any surprise)
