What could be better than a raw March day to see historic Plymouth, Massachusetts? Well actually, a nice June day. But, due to the sideways, near-freezing rain, we were able to park about twenty feet from the famous rock and, with the four or so other intrepid souls, stare at the boulder until our faces froze.
A little earlier, when we visited the local tourist information center, I had been able to pry a restaurant recommendation out of a typically circumspect staffer ("Well, I can't recommend one, but I usually end up at the Weathervane."). So, off to the Weathervane we went to warm up and fill up.
It turns out the Weathervane is an outpost of a small
East Coast chain. I'm not generally a fan of chain restaurants, but this had the feel of a local place, right on the water, with mostly townies occupying the tables.
We started off with a cup of "New England's best" clam chowder. I don't know about best, but it was quite good. Satisfyingly creamy, with hunks of chewy clam and firm potato. Unfortunately, I didn't think to pull out the camera until our entrees arrived:
My wife's lobster roll:

My clam strips and bay scallop combo platter:

That was some great fried seafood. I was impressed that the batter on the scallops differed from that of the clam strips. Neither had even a hint of grease, and were both, mercifully, very lightly salted. The lobster roll was outstanding, too. The chunks of lobster were large and plentiful. My only quibble was with the untoasted hot dog bun they served it on. Pretty bare-bones for a sandwich costing (sitting down?) $14.75. And finally, the fries were nothing special, but they complemented the other fried stuff well, as did the not-too-sweet slaw.
