The title has quotation marks because there is nothing BBQ-like about the popular southeast Texas preparation with this name. These babies are deep fried after getting a hefty coating of cayenne/ garlic salt based spice rub. I tried them today at Floyd's in Webster, and they were damn good. Crab this fresh and in-season is probably going to be good no matter what you do with it, but I thought the frying really locked in that crab flavor, and the spicy, salty rub balanced the sweetness of the meat. I ate a half dozen with 3 Abita Turbodogs and a "side" half dozen of boiled gulf shrimp with horseradish and lemon before rolling myself back to the hotel.

These were small and not as meaty as other blue crabs I've had, but the flavor was great. At 3 bucks each, they were pretty cheap by Chicago standards for sure, but probably not so for these parts.

A raucous crowd was drinking heavily while getting ready to watch football. Friendly folks, though their mouths made them not particularly good company for the one lady in their presence. Floyd's - at least tonight - was a place for manly men. The jovial, lewd conversation might have even made G Wiv blush.

I've had good eats in the Houston area so far, with Floyd's being the most unique place so far, the likes of which one cannot find in Chicago.
