My grandmother was from Beaufort and I've spent a lot of time there over the years. I haven't been for a few years and when I'm there, we eat with my relatives so I can't give you updated restaurant recs. Often when I'm there, my family rents a house and we have a few meals catered by Steve Brown. He also runs a bakery and take out market on Ribaud road (pronounced REE-bout in BYOO-fert). His fried chicken is the best I've ever had and he makes great cookies, too. Gullah house is over-hyped. Unfortunately, you won't be there for shrimp season because Beaufort shrimp is the best in the world (o.k., so I'm biased).

One of the best restaurants that I have experienced in South Carolina is a steamtable operation/cafeteria called Sgt. White's Diner in Beaufort, SC. They have five or six entrees and a dozen side dishes that are incredible.

Sgt. White is an retired Marine and the guy can really cook.

It is a lunch only operation and the prices are $6-12 for a plate.

Sgt. White's is VERY good. It's not fine dining but is one of the better "meat & 3" places I've been to. There have been on-again/off-again rumblings of Sgt. White's "imminent" closing but it's still open atm. Make sure one of the sides is the greens!
Objects in mirror appear to be losing.

The thing that struck me as weird was the place was scheduled to open at 11:00 am but did not until 11:10 am. That cost me a lot of money as their was a Rite-Aid in the same parking lot.(g)
