Cyprus, anyone?

Husband and I are going there in April to visit his parents. They have lived there for going on 20 years, but they don't eat out much. (They are both fabulous cooks, and they generally stay home.) They live in a village outside Limassol. His dad's 70th birthday will fall during our trip, and we will also likely be on our own during the day for large chunks of the trip. Any tips where we should go, either for lunches on our own, or for his dad's birthday (if he wants to go out)?

sorry, I was in Limasol about 10 years ago a few times, so I can't give you any names. I can give you a couple of directions, though

it seems like there are meat places and fish places. there are places that will cook up many different types of fish as courses - so you get fish after fish after fish, and they will vary between fried and grilled. really some of the absolute best fish I have ever had. I wish I could tell you the name of the place I went to, but I am sure there are 100 just like it. but aim for having one lunch in a place like that.

there are places that cook a whole sheep in a barrel - not fancy, but fantastic. the mutton is falling apart soft. again, there are a lot of places like this - picture sort of like barbeque - plastic tables with almost nothing but meat on offer.

the other thing that I remember were loukumades - honey puffs. donuts with honey.

I used to buy honey, lokum (turkish delight but don't call it that) and cheese to bring home.

Thanks, all - if anyone else has ideas, keep them coming! I know it's a teeny place, but I'm really looking forward to sitting in some dinky taverna in a village with sheep. And anything else hat may cross our paths. Ideas of all sorts are welcome, particularly if anyone knows of a place in or near Limassol that would be good for a nice birthday dinner for my FIL.

I am currently residing in Cyprus, however I'm over by Paphos, about a 45 min drive from Limassol. I haven't eaten out anywhere over that way, but I just wanted to say I hope you have a lovely trip and hope that you find that lovely little taverna, they are all over and the food is wonderful. I've not had a bad meal at one.
